Central Pierce Fire & Rescue You may ask yourself, why is the fire department on the ballot so frequently? Funding for fire districts was established in the 1930’s so rural communities could provide fire protection (only). Since that time, many areas around the state, including Pierce County, have developed into urban or suburban communities requiring additional resources. The legislature has responded by providing funding sources which must be voter approved such as the EMS levy, FBC, or Excess levies. None of these are permanent sources of funding. Currently, voters must reauthorize this funding every six years.
