CURRICULUM REDESIGN May 2016

PURPOSE OF THE CURRICULUM?

Purpose of the new curricula…  To make curriculum more flexible, innovative, and personalized  To reduce the prescriptive nature of current curricula while ensuring a solid focus on essential learning  To focus new curricula on higher order learning  To make explicit the cross-curricular competencies that support life-long learning  To integrate Aboriginal worldviews and knowledge  To respect the inherent logic & unique nature of the disciplines while supporting efforts to develop cross-curricular units  To have assessment & evaluation that align with the changed emphases in curriculum

Teacher driven The redesigned curriculum is… Concept-Based Open and transparent process BCTF very involved Key concepts, principles Consultation and feedback

CONCEPT-BASED focused on the key concepts, principles, and generalizations to organize knowledge and solve problems within and across disciplines the goal is deeper learning where students use key concepts as jump-off points for inquiry-based learning or to enable them to make decisions, solve problems, and communicate their ideas focuses on helping students construct a big picture of the patterns, generalizations, and abstractions inherent in the disciplines within an area of learning is structured to help students retain & transfer what they learn to new contexts students build deeper understanding with a focus on the “why” rather than simply the “what.”
