PROPERTIES OF EXPONENTS CHAPTER 6 LESSON 1

VOCABULARY Simplify- To rewrite an expression without parentheses or negative exponents Standard Notation- Typical form for numbers Scientific Notation- The expression of a number in the form a x 10 n, where 1≤a<10 and n is an integer Dimensional Analysis- Performing operations with units

CONCEPT: NEGATIVE EXPONENTS For any real number a ≠ 0 and any integer n,

PRODUCT OF POWERS For any real number a and integers m and n,

QUOTIENT OF POWERS For any real number a ≠ 0 and integers m and n,

POWER OF A POWER For any real number a ≠ 0 and integers m and n,

POWER OF A PRODUCT For any real numbers a and b ≠ 0 and integer m,

POWER OF A QUOTIENT For any real numbers a and b ≠ 0 and integer m,

ZERO POWER For any real number a

COMBINING PROPERTIES TO SIMPLIFY EXPRESSIONS Simplify denominator and numerator first Divide numerator by denominator

EXAMPLES

SCIENTIFIC NOTATION

WRITING A NUMBER IN SCIENTIFIC NOTATION Move the decimal place to make the number be between 1 and 10. The number of spaces moved is the exponent written for 10 in scientific notation. If decimal is moved to the right, the exponent is negative. If decimal is moved to the left, the exponent is positive.
