What Is an Urban Heat Island? An urban heat island (UHI) is a city or metropolitan area that is significantly warmer than its surrounding rural areas. An Urban Heat Island forms when urban structures replace vegetation, and trap heat to make cities hotter. These changes cause urban regions to become warmer than their rural surroundings, forming an "island" of higher temperatures in the landscape.
