Apostle’s Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell, The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; The Holy Catholic Church; The communion of saints; The forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen
Today’s Psalm Reading by In Hye Kim Psalms 1 1.Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. 2.But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3.He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. 4.Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. 5.Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. 6.For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
Today’s Prayer Prayer by In Hye Kim
This Week’s Verse After he said this, he took some bread and gave thanks to God in front of them all. Then he broke it and began to eat. They were all encouraged and ate some food themselves. (Acts 27:35-36) (3/16)
Next Week’s Verse When the islanders saw the snake hanging from his hand, they said to each other, "This man must be a murderer; for though he escaped from the sea, Justice has not allowed him to live." (Acts 28:4) (Mar.23)
Today’s phrase Looking back over this dramatic episode in Paul’s life, several key principles of true biblical leadership can be clearly seen. Looking back over ____________________, several key principles of _________________ can be clearly seen. (Mar 16) When he became strong, his heart was so proud that he acted corruptly, and he was unfaithful to the Lord. When he (or she, you) became _______, his (or her, your) heart was so proud that _______. (Mar. 23)
This Week’s Conversation (3/16) A: What a leader Paul was! He showed an absolutely amazing leadership during the trip to Rome. B: Really? How? A: During the trip, he was a trusted prisoner, took the initiative, used good judgments, spoke with authority, strengthened others, never compromised his absolutes, and, finally, led by example. B: Wow! Those are essential qualities that a great leader must have. A: Yes. If you want to be a great leader, you must study Paul’s leadership. B: I will definitely do that.
Next Week’s Conversation (3/23) A: Did you read recently the article of pastor John MacArthur’s interview with a korean newspaper? B: I didn’t know that. What did he say? A: Among many questions, the following is memorable to me. What has modern churches lost? B: Well, what’s his answer? A: Bible! That’s the absolute value churches must protect and defend. B: It reminds me of many things. We should study the Bible more diligently and deeply. A: On that point, his bible commentary is very helpful.
Today’s Reading Acts 28:1~16 1.Once safely on shore, we found out that the island was called Malta. 2.The islanders showed us unusual kindness. They built a fire and welcomed us all because it was raining and cold. 3.Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand. 4.When the islanders saw the snake hanging from his hand, they said to each other, "This man must be a murderer; for though he escaped from the sea, Justice has not allowed him to live.“
Today’s Reading Acts 28:1~16 5.But Paul shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill effects. 6.The people expected him to swell up or suddenly fall dead, but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god. 7.There was an estate nearby that belonged to Publius, the chief official of the island. He welcomed us to his home and for three days entertained us hospitably. 8.His father was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him and, after prayer, placed his hands on him and healed him.
Today’s Reading Acts 28:1~16 9.When this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured. 10.They honored us in many ways and when we were ready to sail, they furnished us with the supplies we needed. 11.After three months we put out to sea in a ship that had wintered in the island. It was an Alexandrian ship with the figurehead of the twin gods Castor and Pollux. 12.We put in at Syracuse and stayed there three days. 13.From there we set sail and arrived at Rhegium. The next day the south wind came up, and on the following day we reached Puteoli.
Today’s Reading Acts 28:1~16 14.There we found some brothers who invited us to spend a week with them. And so we came to Rome. 15.The brothers there had heard that we were coming, and they traveled as far as the Forum of Appius and the Three Taverns to meet us. At the sight of these men Paul thanked God and was encouraged. 16.When we got to Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, with a soldier to guard him.
Paul’s obedience to everyday life. God guided the people toward the point that they could not help relying on Him. Other Lessons
Paul’s Journey to Rome, Part2 The Last Lap: Malta to Rome (Acts 28:1~16)
It is a foundational biblical truth that obedience brings God’s blessing, disobedience His chastening. In Luke 11:28, Jesus said, “He replied, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.” James reveals that it is the “effectual doer” who “shall be blessed in what he does” (James 1:25). Introduction
In Deuteronomy 11:26–28, Moses exhorted the Israelites: 26. See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse- 27. the blessing if you obey the commands of the LORD your God that I am giving you today; 28. the curse if you disobey the commands of the LORD your God and turn from the way that I command you today by following other gods, which you have not known. Introduction
One way God blesses those who obey Him is by granting their desires. In Psalm 21:1–2, David wrote, 1. “O LORD, the king rejoices in your strength. How great is his joy in the victories you give! 2. You have granted him the desire of his heart and have not withheld the request of his lips.” Introduction
Psalm 37:4 promises, “Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart,” while Psalm 145:19 declares,” He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them.” Proverbs 10:24 contrasts the disobedient with the obedient: “What the wicked dreads will overtake him; what the righteous desire will be granted..” Introduction
The apostle Paul had desired for many years to visit Rome. In Acts 19:21 he said, “After all this had happened, Paul decided to go to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and Achaia. "After I have been there," he said, "I must visit Rome also.“ Introduction
He repeatedly expressed that desire to the Roman Christians: I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong– (Romans 1:11) That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are at Rome. (Romans 1:15) But now that there is no more place for me to work in these regions, and since I have been longing for many years to see you, (Romans 15:23) Introduction
Acts 28 opens with Paul on the Mediterranean island of Malta. He had left Caesarea more than two months earlier, bound for Rome to have his appeal heard by the emperor. In a risky attempt to reach a more favorable harbor on Crete to winter in, the apostle’s ship had been caught in the dreaded Euraquilo. That violent storm had driven the vessel for fourteen terror-filled days across the Mediterranean to Malta. Introduction
There the crew attempted to beach the ship, but it ran aground and was destroyed by the pounding surf. Miraculously, all 276 persons on board managed to reach the shore safely. God had promised Paul that although the ship would be destroyed, no lives would be lost (27:22). He had also promised that the ship would run aground on an island (27:26). Introduction
Both promises were fulfilled when the ship reached Malta. The events of Acts 28:1–16 unfold in five scenes: (1) pagan hospitality, (2) potential harm, (3) public healing, (4) the promise honored, and (5) private housing. Introduction
Having made it safely through the breakers to the beach, the people from the wrecked freighter huddled wet and exhausted on the shore. It was only then that they found out that the island they were on was Malta. Malta, located fifty-eight miles south of Sicily, is about seventeen miles long and nine miles wide. Pagan Hospitality
Luke records that they showed extraordinary kindness, beyond what would normally be expected. They did not murder or enslave the victims of the shipwreck, as sometimes happened in the ancient world. Pagan Hospitality
Exhausted from their long ordeal, soaked from their swim to shore, drenched by the driving rain, and chilled by the cold November wind, they welcomed a fire to warm themselves. God requires Christians, both church leaders (1 Tim. 3:2; Titus 1:8) and all believers (Rom. 12:13; Heb. 13:2; 1 Pet. 4:9), to show hospitality. Pagan Hospitality
One aspect of God’s general revelation to all people is the moral law written on their hearts. Although the specifics may vary, every culture holds some things to be right and other things to be wrong. Pagan Hospitality
Romans 2:14, Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, 15. since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them. Pagan Hospitality
Because God has so revealed Himself, all men are without excuse: Romans 2:1~3 1. You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. 2. Now we know that God's judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. 3. So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God's judgment? Pagan Hospitality
