“After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, “Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes… Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, join us there.Our God will fight for us!”(Nehemiah 4:14,20) (1) Pastor Gary HartMay, Text: Nehemiah 4 Sermon Title: “Fight for your families.” Introduction: Today is Mother’s Day. Families are under attack. Where they are attacked we must give the sound of the trumpet, and shout out fathers and mothers “fight for your families.”

1. Don’t be afraid. A. Ridicules (4:1-3) (1) Ridiculed the workers by calling them “feeble” (weak). (2) (2) Ridiculed the work. 3 questions: “Will they restore their wall?” “Will they offer sacrifices?” “Will they finish in a day?” (3) Ridiculed the materials used. “Can they bring the stones back to life from those heaps of rubble— burned as they are?” (4) Ridiculed the finished work. “Even a fox climb- ing up on it would break down their wall of stones!” (2)

B. Threats (4:7-9) came from all directions. “They all plotted together to fight against Jerusalem and stir up trouble against it.” (v.8) (2) (3) C. Discouragements (4:10) are a key weapon. D. Rumors (v.11-23) are often spread. “Wherever you turn they will attack us.” (v.12) How to apply: Mothers have to deal with opposition that comes from ridicules, threats, discouragements, and rumors.

2. Remember the Lord and His work (pray and guard v.9). (2) (4) A. Be prayerful. Nehemiah’s response to ridicule was to pray and ask God to fight the enemy for him(v.4-5). God is great and awesome. B. Be diligent. “For the people worked with all their heart”(v.6). “We all returned to the wall, each to our own work” (v.15). C. Be on guard. “With their swords, spears and bows.”(v.13) “Those who carried materials did their work with one hand and held a weapon in the other, and each of the builders wore his sword at his side as he worked.” (v.17-18). Building and battling are part of the Christian life (Lk.14:28-33).

D. Be persistent. Continue the work. “So we contin-ued the work with half the men holding spears.”(v.21a) (5) E. Be strong. Work “From the first light of dawn till the stars came out.” (v.21b) F. Be cooperative. Work together. “So they can serve us as guards by night and as workers by day.” (v.22) G. Be focused. No one “took off our clothes; each had his weapon, even when he went for water.” (v.23) How to apply: Mothers must be prayerful. I remember my mother’s prayers for our family and for me (I am thankful for my mother’s faith and prayers).

Mothers must be diligent. It seems like a mother’s work is never done. When can Mom enjoy life? A mother’s work is never done. (I am thankful for my mother’s work). (2) (3) (6)

When can Mom enjoy life? When I was in school Mom said: Wait until you graduate, Mom will enjoy life. When I graduated Mom said: Wait until you find work, Mom will enjoy life. When I was working Mom said: Wait until you get married, Mom will enjoy life. When I got married Mom said: Wait until you have children, Mom will enjoy life. When I had children Mom said: Wait until your children grow,Mom will enjoy life. Now children are grown, I can enjoy life. But Mom, can you hear me? (7)

Mothers must be on guard. If a father is the mayor of the city/family, then a mother is the city manager, fire-men, and policemen (I am thankful for my mother’s discipline). (2) (8)

Mothers must be persistent. Mothers never give up on their children. (I am thankful that my mother never gave up on me. She was there the times that I needed help the most. We took walks together along Lake Erie and after surgery). (2) (9) Mothers must be strong. It takes someone strong, to make someone strong. (I am thankful that I am standing here today because my mother was strong). It takes someone strong, to make someone strong.

Mothers must be cooperative. It takes a community to raise children. (I am thankful that my mother, father, grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, pastors, etc. worked together to raise me). (2) (10) Mothers must be focused. It is so easy to get distracted. Don’t forget life’s priorities. (I am thankful that my mother was focused is raising my brother, sister, and me). What are you thankful for on this Mother’s Day? My mother has gone on to Heaven, but I am so thankful for her. I am most thankful for her faith and character.

I had the privilege to speak at her funeral. I read the notes in my Mother’s Bible at her funeral. It brought much comfort to my heart and to our family. (11)

Which step have you reached today? I won’t do it. I can’t do it. I want to do it. How do I do it? I’ll try to do it.I can do it.I will do it.Yes, I did it! (12)
