Racing Car Your student design team has designed a new car that allows children with physical and cognitive disabilities to race down a hill by allowing an adult to ride in a backseat and maintain full control of the car. Based on suggestions from the adults, you have added spring tension to the child’s steering wheel in front in order to simulate the feeling of driving and make the child’s experience more realistic and fun. The child will not have the ability to control the car, only the illusion of control. Before the first test run with an adult and a 14-year-old child onboard you hear the child’s parent tell the child to “be careful” and to “drive safely.” The parent turns to you, explains that because of a cognitive disability the child likely won’t understand the difference anyway, and asks you to tell the child that the front steering wheel is actually functional. The request that you lie to the child would take advantage of the child’s disability and it creates the possibility that the child would feel responsible if they were to lose the race or have an accident. Would you lie to the child? ___ Yes___ Can’t decide___ No What are the ethical issues?

Your student project team is working with city officials and is tasked with improving the quality of housing for people in an impoverished section of your community. One of your tasks is to rate the overall quality of each building in this area on a scale from one to five, where five represents a satisfactory, good quality home, three represents a home in need of improvement, and one represents an unsatisfactory, unsafe dwelling. The worst of these buildings are unsafe for habitation. The city has provided you with a specially-designed rating sheet to assist you. But while the city’s plan is simply to increase the quality of the average home in this area, you have good reason to believe they will be using your data to identify and raze the most unsafe and dangerous buildings, requiring those residents to relocate. The plan has met with opposition from the people likely to be affected by it, who say that if their homes are selected for demolition they might not be financially able to move to safer dwellings. Instead of ending up in better housing, some might end up homeless. Would you rate the homes? ___ Yes___ Can’t decide___ No What are the ethical issues? Quality of Housing

As part of a design project, your student team has been conducting water quality testing in a creek just downstream from a large manufacturing plant. When some of your samples test positive for a significant concentration of dangerous pollutants from the plant, it seems possible that the neighborhood children, who often play in and near the creek, could be in danger of exposure. Your professor confirms your test results showing the presence of dangerous levels of pollutants. However, you know that the manufacturing plant is a major employer of the town’s residents. If it faces any further fines, it might layoff its workers or have to shut down completely, leaving its workers with few other job options. Although reporting your findings to the proper authorities would allow the pollution problem to be addressed, it might also result in the community being economically devastated by lost jobs. Ideally, these standards are ones that every rational person wants every other to follow, even if everyone else’s following them would mean that he or she had to do the same” Harris, C. Morality vs Ethics “By [professional ethics or just ethics], owe refer to those special morally permissible standards of conduct that, ideally, every member of a profession wants every other member to follow, even if that would mean having to do the same.” These standards of conduct include both formal codes of conduct, but also acceptable practices in the profession. oFor engineers, “ethics is as much a part of what engineers in particular know as factors of safety, testing procedures, or ways to design for reliability, durability, or economy.”

How safe is safe enough? From the Code: Hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public. Is it possible to make something 100% safe? How do we decide what is “safe enough”? How do you make ethical decisions, in general?

Ethical Judgment Evaluate the options by asking the following questions: 1.The Utilitarian Approach oWhich option will produce the most good and do the least harm? 2.The Rights Approach oWhich option best respects the rights of all who have a stake? 3.The Justice Approach oWhich option treats people as I want to be treated? 4.The Ethic of Care Approach oWhich option is best for those most in need? 5.The Virtue Approach oWhich option leads me to demonstrate honesty or other virtues?
