Culture & Counterculture Section 3

The Counterculture Made up of white middle-class college age people; disillusioned by the war & injustice in America New Left movement- American society is hollow –“Tune in, turn on, drop out”- Timothy Leary –Left school, home, jobs to form idealistic communities

Hippie culture

Hippie Culture Rock n’ roll, outrageous clothes, sexual freedom, drugs (LSD & marijuana) Zen Buddhism, meditation Grow hair long, reject convention Living in communes Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco becomes hippie capital

Decline of Movement Lasts only a few years, lifestyle begins to fail –Who will pay the bills? –Drug use takes its toll Janis Joplin & Jimi Hendrix die of overdose Hippies begin collecting welfare, living on the street

Art Pop art brings art into mainstream –Led by Andy Warhol –Bright, simple look using commercial images –Emphasizes “cookie-cutter” lifestyle

Music Rock n’ roll is essential to counterculture The Beatles are one of the most influential –Came to U.S. in 1964, took over and inspired many groups after them Aug Woodstock festival of “peace, love & music” –400,000 attend, all goes well

Music

Changing Attitudes Hippie culture fades, but leaves its mark –Begin sexual revolution, casual attitude –TV, movies address sex & violence Many found this liberal attitude “moral decay” Dress, lifestyle, social behavior all newly liberal

Conservative Response Hippie culture has opposite effect Many thought country had lost sense of right & wrong Nixon expresses anger, many agree –Anarchy at college campuses, pampered youth leads to need for instant gratification (living by your senses) Conservatives will take control of govt., find solutions for lawlessness Nixon will increase the size of govt.
