Study Guide pg. 58 HL book pg. 189

 Can be temporary or permanent  About 1 in 6 couples experience this

1) A drug to stop the woman’s normal menstrual cycle is injected once a day for 3 weeks 2) FSH is injected once a day for days to make ovaries develop many follicles 3) HCG (another hormone) is injected 36 hours before egg collection to loosen the egg and make it mature

4) The man provides semen, the sperm are processed, use only healthiest ones 5) The eggs are extracted from the follicles 6) Each egg is mixed with sperm and kept overnight in an incubator 7) The dishes are checked to see if fertilization has worked 8) Two or three embryos are selected and placed into the uterus

9) A pregnancy test is taken to see if any embryos have implanted 10) A scan is done to check if pregnancy is continuing normally

 Infertility can be due to environmental factors, so offspring will not inherit them  Embryos that are killed during IVF are unable to feel pain because their nervous system has not developed  Genetic diseases could be screened before transferring fertilized egg back to uterus  Parents will have a strong desire to be parents; will be good parents  Allows people who want to have children to have them

 Infertility could be passed on to children  More embryos are produced than needed, denying them a chance for life  Embryologists select embryos to transfer to uterus, so humans are determining whether new humans will live  IVF is an unnatural process  Infertility should be accepted
