Background Information Douglas Haig was born on June , the son of a wealthy whiskey distiller. He was educated at Oxford and Sandhurst. He had a long successful military career serving in many campaigns such as the Boer war.
Background Information Douglas Haig became Commander-in Chief of the BEF a week before Christmas in Under his command were a million soldiers spread out along the western front fighting via trench warfare something that Haig had never encountered before. Additionally under his command the German army were defeated in 1918 Additionally under his command the German army were defeated in 1918
However… Haig is not remembered like other Generals who lead their country to victory i.e. Lord Nelson has a column in Trafalgar Square, London, there are also statues and roads named after other famous Generals. Haig is not remembered as a national hero but quite the opposite… He is in fact remembered as ‘the Butcher of the Somme’ and is blamed for the massacre of 600,000 men during this battle.
However this was not always the case…
