Billen 17-Nov-2008 JACoW SPMS and Website in Europe 4 SPMS Instantiation and Versioning  12 SPMS instances created  4 virtual instances having the conference repository and web-server hosted elsewhere  8 real instances with data repository and web access tools (DADs)  The SPMS evolved continuously  Latest version always available from the web  Upgrades of existing instances handled by Matt  Minor bugs always possible, again requiring Matt  Development effort on registration module perturbing  Collaboration between Regional Support Centers  Worked perfectly!

Billen 17-Nov-2008 JACoW SPMS and Website in Europe 5 Incidents and Problems  Failing job repository synchronization (sync.repo)  Occurred several times on different instances  Reset of the job does not help  Problem related to Oracle Intermedia indexes  Workaround by daily job for rebuilding of the indexes  Database intervention required in case of urgency  Performance problems at peak usage  Conference start (EPAC)  Database and web servers are shared resources  Local problems with web pages that I cannot reproduce  Long-running or blocking user/developer processes  Profiles... (LINAC)  Lots of confusion, cleaning duplicates (by Christine)  Bug correction on 08-Jun End of story?  Support expected to be immediate...which is not possible

Billen 17-Nov-2008 JACoW SPMS and Website in Europe 8 Central Repository and Hosting  Cleaning up of run-time data  sent: 39,266 since 30-Oct-2003  logs: 24,461 since 03-Oct-2005  failures log: 9,436 since 05-Nov-2003  Evolution of the hosting  Intervention 09-Jan :30 to 12-Jan :00 (UTC)  Registered in SPMS unavailable times  To be announced to potential users  Migration to new hardware, different operating system  Upgrade to new Oracle version   SPMS compiled correctly in test environment, applications to be tested  I propose to rename TIMESTAMP column names  Remote access restrictions will be introduced on 01-Dec-2008  Principle: No direct database access from outside CERN  Affects: SPMS developers and synchronization processes of remote instances  Solution: to be discussed (IP address authorization)

Billen 17-Nov-2008 JACoW SPMS and Website in Europe 9 Database Character Set  Defines the characters that can be represented in the database  WE8ISO8859P1 currently on JACoW-DB  Restricted multilingual support, single-byte encoding  Not a recommended character set by Oracle  Likely to be used at CERN’s upgraded central databases  WE8ISO8859P15 alternative character set  Minor difference, includes the Euro symbol €  Not in Oracle instant client  AL32UTF8 universal character set  Unrestricted multilingual support with multibyte encoding  A recommended character set by Oracle  Allows to store storing Chinese/Japanese characters  Not used widely, unknown side-effects, impact not tested

Billen 17-Nov-2008 JACoW SPMS and Website in Europe 12 Indexing & Searching of JACoW Pages  Web crawler passes every 5 days to index web pages  Occasional hiccup of the crawler needs CERN-IT intervention  Monitoring and restarting of the crawler under discussion  Only indexed pages can be found by the Search engine  Search on author, title, keyword or any text  Special characters using diacritical marks (ü, é, å, ö,...)  150 persons registered in SPMS with a special character  Example: Gålnander as author in PDF file  Search on Gålnander successful (since 16-Aug-2008)  Search on Galnander unsuccessful  Issue raised with CERN-IT, will be investigated
