Full figure portrait, standing to left, right arm outstretched, holding handkerchief, town scene in background (red chalk artist's change at left arm). On verso in pencil: 1m/- Signed, lower right with brush Rt Ck. Notes (Hamnet) Provenance: Drawing was purchased as the 50th anniversary gift to the Library from the Honorable and Mrs. Edward H. Foley. The drawing was bought from Justin G. Schiller, Ltd. of N.Y. Purchased with a similar drawing of Brooke as Hamlet, originally matted together. (acc ). Notes (Hamnet) Subject: Portrait pictures Gustavus Vaughan Brooke ( ) in the role of Iago from Shakespeare's Othello. The costume in which Brooke is pictured bears resemblance to the costume he is pictured wearing in an engraving in the role, engraved by T. Sherrat from a daguerreotype by Fitzgibbon (see ART File B872 no.5) though there are some variations. W.J. Lawrence's biography of Brooke (1892) notes him as first playing Iago in Sheffield in 1837, and playing the part for the first time in London in Notes (Hamnet) This record contains unverifiable data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text. Please consult Curator for assistance. Notes (Hamnet) Artist: Signature varies from existing examples of Cruikshank's monogram found in Nahum 'Mongograms of Victorian...artists' and Nagler 'Die Monogramisten', however, there seem to be many variants in Cruikshank's signature and since a brush was used on this occasion the variation may be caused by the difference in medium. Cruikshank executed numerous theatrical portraits which were etched and issued, plain and colored, by theatrical publishers. Notes (Hamnet) History: Though bookseller described the drawing as a costume sketch Cruikshank was not known to have designed costume (though he did paint scenery at the Adelphi in the 1820s) and drawing was most likely intended to be etched as a theatrical portrait. There is, however, no listing of a similar portrait in Harv. Cat. of Dram Ports. Call Number (Hamnet) ART Box C955.2 no.2 (size S)

Notes (Hamnet) Artist: Item is attributed to Moblard due to its similarity to other works in the FSL collection signed by him. See other entries under Moblard and guide card for Augustus Toedteberg. No biographical information has yet come to light on Moblard. His work indicates that he was a watercolor copyist of rare prints. Notes (Hamnet) History: Portrait is copied after an engraving designed by George Cruikshank, engraved by Alias and published by J. Roach in It is listed as item no.60 under Kean's entry in Harv. cat. FSL has an engraving, matching the Harv. description, which lacks imprint and engraver's name and may be a copy print rather than the original. (ART File K24.4 no.73a). Notes (Hamnet) Provenance: Item was purchased by the Folgers from the sale of the collection of Augustus Toedteberg, pt.2, held by Anderson, Feb , Item is listed as no.2118 in the catalog of that sale and the description gives it as a 'Watercolor Drawing... after the original by George Cruikshank...' Formerly catalogued as if by Cruikshank as ART Box C955 no.59. Notes (Hamnet) Subject: The label underneath the figure continues with the quotation 'I bleed Sir, but not kill'd.' Othello, Act V, Sc. 2. This quotation also appears on the engraving. Judging from the publication date of Cruikshank's portrait it may be assumed that the picture was taken from Kean's performance of Iago at Drury Lane in At this time Kean is noted as playing Iago and Othello on alternate nights. For a discussion of the role see Hillebrand's biography of Kean, p Notes (Hamnet) Title from label on item. Full figure portrait, to front, looking left, hands in front, right hand holding a handkerchief. Facsimile autograph has been added at left of Kean's feet.
