General Advising Information Individual questions can be answered by ing or Phone – Application information and forms can be found at choose the Dental Hygiene link and then choose the Application link. Requirements may change each year so it is important to keep updated.

AAS Program Overview Enrollment is limited to six students with one alternate at LCSC if an admitted student declines. Year 1 – Prerequisites typically take 4 to 6 terms to complete Year 2 – Accepted students complete 1 st year core courses and dental office experience. Year 3 – Accepted students complete 2 nd year core courses and dental office experience – then they are eligible to take the licensing exams to become a dental hygienist

Bachelor Degree – OIT Students who complete all Associate of Applied Science degree requirements have the option to continue their training through OIT Oregon Institute of Technology Students interested in completing a Bachelor’s degree can review Section 5 in the academic advising resource for more information.

Minimum requirements to apply Be admitted to Lane as a Credit Student with an assigned L number. Meet LSCS residency requirements –item 7 page 3 of app. Have HOBET testing completed see item 5 page 3 of app. All prerequisite courses completed with a letter grade of C- or higher Spring term or before - prior to planned Fall entry. Jacob M. Hornby Ph.D. must sign off on the Point Sheet in order for students to apply. Courses completed at other institutions must be considered equivalent or substituted with an approved course.

Application timeline Application deadline is typically late-April for the following fall entry HOBET Testing by appointment only Courses taken and completed during through Spring term may count toward application points. Submit proof of enrollment in Spring Semester or quarter courses identified as “in progress” in the Application Point Sheet. See Item 12 page 5. One new class is accepted each Fall term.

Math application and program requirement Complete MATH 108 Intermediate Algebra or MATH 130 Finite Mathematics One of the above courses is required to apply. Courses completed at other schools must be considered equivalent or be approved for use in the application.

Chemistry Requirement to apply CHEM 105 General, Organic and Biochemistry Course is required to apply.

Anatomy and Physiology sequence *BI 231 *BIOL252 (Anat. and Phys. I) and BIOL253 (Anat. and Phys. II) – required to apply *BI232 *BIOL252 (Anat. and Phys. I) and BIOL253 (Anat. and Phys. II) – required to apply BI233 *BIOL252 (Anat. and Phys. I) and BIOL253 (Anat. and Phys. II) BI234 BIOL250 (Microbiology for Health Sciences) LSCS applicants must complete 1 year of Anatomy and Physiology for admission at a quarter or semester school. Microbiology and English 102 may be in progress.

English Composition sequence ENGL101 College Writing – required to apply ENGL 102 Research Writing – meets program requirement Courses completed at other schools must be considered equivalent or be approved for use in the application.

Screening Test for Points Complete HOBET Testing Requirements: Testing is done by appointment only and will be done at the Lewis-Clark State College Testing Office. Must be completed October 1, 2011, or later. Must have a minimum composite final score of 50. Contact LCSC Center for New Directions to schedule a testing date and time. Phone (208)

Spanish Proficiency or Course options. Spanish Proficiency as documented by a) Spanish 102, or an equivalent course, or higher course with a grade of Pass or C- or better and must be completed and transcripted, or b) Completion of the Spanish CLEP Test with a score of 50 or higher, January 2009 or later. b1) Submit a stamped, sealed score sheet with your application packet, or b2) Order an official CLEP transcript from The transcript must be stamped and sealed and received at Lane’s Enrollment Service by the application close date. Paid Work experience in a Dental Office Students may be eligible for application points for Paid Work Experience in a Dental Office. Please review application for specific details. Verified 960 hours or more are eligible for points.

Competitive Criteria Completing all prerequisite courses as listed in the application is required to apply. The higher your grades the more points you will be eligible for in the application. The science courses will be worth more than the rest. A’s will be worth more than B’s and B’s will be worth more than C’s. Additional Application Points will be awarded for: The following courses – ENGL 102, BIOL 250, Spanish Proficiency and Paid Work Experience in a Dental Office

Frequently Asked Questions-pg 1 Q: What kind of grades do I need to be competitive? A: To be competitive you need to have as strong of a GPA as possible on the prerequisites. Q: How many points can I earn toward the application? A: The points can vary each year. Total points possible is 50 - HOBET test is worth 12 points, 34 points for courses, 2 points for Spanish Proficiency and 2 points for work experience.

FAQ page 2 Q: What happens after the applications are submitted? A: Students are notified – mid May. Q: What can I expect from the HOBET test. A: This test covers Math and Science concepts. Basic math skills are covered in the test. Science questions come from general science courses. Q: How long is the waiting list? A: There is no waiting list. Students are either accepted, placed on an alternate list or not accepted.

Tips for success Take your time perform well in each class. Don’t do this alone. Ask for help. Do informational interviews-see if this is what you really want. Get work in the Health Care field to see what opportunities exist in the medical world. Seek advising the second or third week of the term to check-in and get updates – typically this is the slowest time of each term. Register early to help with your term-by-term planning and to gain access to high demand courses.
