HISTORY OF SKATEBOARDING Skateboarding was created in the early 1950’s The earliest skateboards were made of wooden planks and roller skate wheels. It wasn't until the later 1970’s when the Zephyr Team brought skateboarding into the mainstream
ON THE RISE Since the 1970’s, skateboarding has expanded into a worldwide sporting event as well as a pastime and hobby for millions of youth. A 2002 report by American Sports Data found that there were 12.5 million skateboarders in the world. 80% of skateboarders polled who had used a board in the last year were under the age of 18 and 74% were male.
Differences in skateboarding cultures From the end of the 70’s through the late 80’s “vert”,which could be described as ramp or bowl riding, dominated the skateboarding culture. Now days “street style” which is composed of tricks and maneuvers which can be done in the streets of cities without structured half pipes or empty swimming pools.

COMPETITIONS Skateboarding has competitions for all skill levels, everything from amateur games to trick competitions and professional games such as X Games.
THE “OLIE” Skateboarding was transformed in 1976 by Alan Gelfand by creating the trick now known as the “olie.”
