Delay Tolerant Networking Research Group Kevin Fall, chair Intel Research, Berkeley 60 th IETF 6, 2004
Goals of this Meeting Introduce new people –DTNRG problem overview –State of the RG Share research efforts/experience Update/evaluate our status –IETF Documents –Future directions?
DTNRG is looking at… Radical heterogeneity –Layer-agnostic interconnection of networks (IP and non-IP) Tolerance to disruption/disconnection –No contemporaneous e2e path assumed “Advanced” (multi-path) routing –Similar to multi-commodity flow or trans- shipment problem in operations research
DTN Architecture Highlights Asynchronous messages (bundles) Two-part naming with late binding Enhanced reliability via custody transfer Routing with fragmentation –Predicted and opportunistic connectivity (Security for infrastructure protection) (Flow and congestion control)
Very Brief History DTNRG Chartered as IRTF research group (end of 2002) Architecture evolved from deep-space- focused Interplanetary Internet project –Funded by DARPA –IRTF Group IPNRG retired when DTNRG formed Currents: –IDs on arch, proto, IPN mapping –Implementation, DARPA program, papers, etc
Output Papers: –SIGCOMM 2003 – Architecture –SIGCOMM 2004 – DTN Routing –IEEE Communications – DTN for IPN –SpaceOps – DTN for Mars Exploration Software: –Code released Mar. last year –Public CVS available + new implementation Real-world use: –Not much yet: ICT4B Project, others? Other: –basis for DARPA DTN Program
Agenda [1] Early afternoon talks: –Intro (me) –Mindstream (Keshav, U Waterloo) –Firefighting in San Diego (hwb, SDSC/NLANR) –SNC Project (A. Doria, Lulea/KAIST) –(break)
Agenda [2] Late afternoon talks: –Routing in a DTN (S. Jain, UW) –DTN Reference Implementation (M. Demmer, UCB) –UCLA DTN-Sensor Projects (A. Parker, UCLA) –LTP and SenDT (S. Burleigh, JPL and S. Farrell, Trinity) –Drive-Thru Internet (Joerg Ott, Uni-Bremen) –Wrap-up (all)
Thanks…
