InternationalDomestic Law that governs relations between independent nations Law that governs activity within a nation's borders Nations sign treaties which are considered binding laws Includes both case law and statute law Ex. Free trade agreement, NATO, ownership of the moon etc.. If you break a law in a foreign country you are not protected by the Canadian government. International Law vs. Domestic Law

What are some laws that we have in Canada that American's don't have? Smoking in restaurants Can't drink alchol on the streets Smoking in cars with children Wearing seatbelts Racing cars (going 50kms +)

Read the case on your hand out "I wasn't warned" and answer the questions that follow.

Common/Case Law and Statue Law Common or Case Law are recorded written decisions of judges and is a system of law based on past legal decisions. It is law that is common to everyone. Statute Laws are laws passed by a legislative body (the government) The government will often codify common laws into statute law Constitutional Law a body of law that states what powers the Federal Government has and what powers the Provincial Government has when making laws. It also limits the amount of power a government has.

Substantive and Procedural Law Su bstantive law consists of rules that outline your rights and obligations in society. These are considered crimes of society. Ex. It is a crime to beat up another person. Procedural Law outlines the steps involved in protecting our rights. Ex. There is a formal legal process that the police must follow to obtain a legal search warrant. (Hint: there is a procedure they must follow
