Building Positive Perceptions & Relationships Cultural Jeopardy Cultural competence Ethnicity Culture Selected cultural and sometimes physical characteristics used to classify people into ethnic groups or categories. American ethnic groups include Native Americans, Hispanics, Indians, Latinos, Chinese, African Americans, European Americans and so on. A set of beliefs, behaviors, and interactional patterns that identify a person with a larger social or ethnic group. The ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures. Comprises an awareness of one's own cultural worldview, attitude towards cultural differences, knowledge of different cultural practices and cross-cultural skills.

Culturally competent care meets the needs of our culturally diverse patient population! Putting It All Together Effectiveness of Cultural Competence in the Workplace Improved understanding of those you work for, with, and around. Creates a work environment that allows everyone to reach their full potential. Provides multiple perspectives on problem solving. Better performance outcomes. Increases employee productivity. Increased retention rates. Boosts employee morale. Improved customer relations. Reduces complaints and grievances. It’s the right thing to do!

Putting It All Together Importance of Cultural Competence The achievement of cultural competence assures that patients are treated with dignity and that cultural traditions and values that can impact healthcare are identified and treated respectfully (Organista, Marin, & Chun, 2010).
