Mixtures: Homogeneous and heterogeneous Mixtures Matter Mixtures: Homogeneous and heterogeneous Mixtures

Matter – Mixtures Review A mixture: is made from different pure substances (elements, compounds, or both) that are not chemically joined is held together by physical forces, not chemical can be separated physically (filtration, evaporation, distillation) examples: ocean water, air, soil, vegetable soup

Matter – Mixtures Most substances that you find in nature, as well as most human-made substances, are mixtures of one or more pure substances. Mixtures can be classified as either homogeneous or heterogeneous. The difference between a homogeneous mixture and a heterogeneous mixture is how well the materials are mixed together and how uniform its composition is.

Matter – Homogeneous Mixtures A homogeneous mixture: has a uniform appearance; it looks the same throughout has a uniform composition; it’s made of the same types of particles all the substances that make up the mixture are evenly distributed it can be separated physically

Matter – Homogeneous Mixtures - Solutions One type of homogeneous mixture is a solution: a mixture made of two or more pure substances the particles that make up a solution are too small to be seen examples: salt water, tea, mouthwash, air, alloys (mixture of different metals)

Matter – Homogeneous Mixtures - Solutions A solution is formed when one substance dissolves in another substance: solute – the substance that dissolves solvent – the substance that does the dissolving the solvent dissolves the solute there is usually more solvent than solute example: salt (solute) dissolves in water (solvent)

Matter – Homogeneous Mixtures - Solutions

Matter – Heterogeneous Mixtures A heterogeneous mixture: consists of visibly different substances or states of matter substances remain separate the different substances in the mixture can typically be separated easily examples: iced tea (solid ice and liquid tea), pizza, blood, cereal in milk

Matter – Heterogeneous Mixtures: Suspensions One type of heterogeneous mixture is a suspension: made of larger, visible particles that do not dissolve solid particles will settle and separate over time if left alone examples: pulpy orange juice, tomato juice, sand in water, Chex Mix

Matter – Heterogeneous Mixtures: Suspensions
