MICE Target – Status & Plans Chris Booth Sheffield 28 th February 2006

Chris BoothUniversity of Sheffield 2 Since last CM: Regular meetings on mechanics Sheffield/RAL/Oxford –Convert standalone test setup → working device. –Engineering design for support and withdrawal mechanisms. –Material & techniques compatible with ISIS vacuum. Major progress in readout & control – see Lara’s talk. Support frame under construction at RAL. Ceramic liner made, indium seals tested. Not ready for planned January tests. Measures in place to be ready for June.

Chris BoothUniversity of Sheffield 3 Why did we miss ISIS tests? New drives were over 3 months late. (Manchester connection!) Sheffield technician’s accident – 1 month off work. Under-estimate of work involved (Sheffield & RAL ends) But we learned a lot by trying!

Chris BoothUniversity of Sheffield 4 Plans for (immediate) future Build our own drive units Facilities identified (within University or local companies) for: –Wire erosion of magnet material –Magnetisation –Coil winding –Vacuum potting of coils. Upgrade power electronics 10 A → ≥ 40 A –Manchester development in progress –Lancaster Elec. Eng. Dept. (via Rebecca Seviour)

Chris BoothUniversity of Sheffield 5 Major milestones Full mechanical assembly at RAL – end March Operate at RAL outside ISIS – end May Install & operate in ISIS – June. Detailed programme under preparation
