WHO AM I? REVIEW PPT Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird

Who am I? I am a racist old woman who lives down the block from the Finch family. I become addicted to morphine near the end of my life. Atticus has his son Jem read to me to help me beat my addiction after Jem destroys my flowers. Atticus says that I am an example of true courage because I keep fighting even when I know I will not win the battle against my illness. I put in a box for Jem one of my special flowers, a camellia, to let him know that he and I are “good”.

Mrs. Dubose

Who am I? I appear only briefly in the novel. Dill reports to Scout that I fall down onto my knees in the dirt in front of my house when I learn of my husband’s death. Link Deas, Tom’s former employer, hires me after Tom is shot 17 times. Bob Ewell harasses me on my way home, but Link Deas confronts Bob and makes him stop.

Helen Robinson

Who am I? People think I’m a drunk, but, in truth, I am really sipping out of a bottle of Coca-Cola wrapped in a paper bag. I let people think that because I know they cannot understand how else I could choose to be living with and African-American woman and our children. I share this truth with Scout and Dill and Jem because they are children and are not racists.

Dolphus Raymond

Who am I? I am the narrator of this story. I am now an adult looking back on the events of my childhood. I am fiesty and get myself into trouble when I’m six, fighting with my teacher and Walter Cunningham. But I learn to have empathy, “to climb into the skin” of others, to better get along. At the end of the trial, I still believe that there is “only one kind of folks, folks.”

Who am I? I am dressed as a ham for the school pageant at the end of the novel; this helps save my life when Bob Ewell attacks Jem and me. I get to walk Arthur Radley home and stand on his front porch in the last scene of the novel. I have a special relationship with Miss Maudie. I do not like having to wear dresses, but I act more like a lady than that gossip Miss Stephanie Crawford

Miss Jean-Louise “Scout” Finch

Who am I? By the time the trial starts, I am old enough to understand the injustice of Tom’s guilty verdict. I lose my innocence when I realize that many of the townspeople in Maycomb are racist. Miss Maudie tries to comfort me by pointing out what a few good people do to help behind the scenes. I am sometimes embarrassed that my father is older and not into sports, but I want to be a lawyer like him. I am very curious and do many things to try to get to see Boo Radley; I’m asleep when Scout walks him home.

Jeremy “Jem” Finch

Who am I? I am the oldest of my father’s children. My mother ran off, and my father abuses me. I save up my nickels, so I can send my siblings away and be alone with Tom Robinson. I lie in court to avoid the embarrassment of people knowing that I wanted to kiss a black man. I think Atticus is mocking me in court by being polite. I try to grow geraniums in slop jars in what is otherwise a disheveled junkyard of a backyard.

Mayella Ewell

Who am I? After I get in trouble with the wrong crowd, my father makes me stay in the house. Crazy rumors circulate and the Finch children are fascinated by me. I leave them presents in the tree. I sew Jem’s pants for him. I put a blanket around Scout when Miss Maudie’s house is on fire. I save the children’s lives and kill Bob Ewell. I am considered a “mockingbird”.

Mr. Arthur “Boo” Radley

Who am I? I get my left hand caught in a cotton gin when I am 12. I felt sorry for Mayella Ewell and sometimes helped her with odd chores. I am falsely accused of raping Mayella Ewell. I am almost killed my a lynch mob before my trial. I lose faith in the justice system after I am found guitly and try to escape from the prison yard. I am shot 17 times. I am considered a “mockingbird”.

Tom Robinson

Who am I? I work for Atticus Finch. He does not let his sister Aunt Alexandra fire me when she comes to live with them, as he is a fair man and values me. I speak differently at work than I do in my private life. I take the children to my church when Atticus is out of town; there they are welcomed by everyone except Lula.

Calpurnia

Who am I? I am the sheriff of Maycomb. I take Bob Ewell’s switchblade from the scene of the crime as part of my plan to prevent Arthur “Boo” Radley from getting too much attention for killing Bob Ewell. I say “Let the dead bury the dead this time”

Heck Tate

Who am I? I am Walter’s father. I teach Walter to be proud and never take handouts even though we are poor. Atticus helps me with some legal problems with my land. I am part of a lynch mob, but I am stopped in my tracks by Scout, who treats me politely, and makes me remember that Atticus is a father just like I am, and that I should walk away from this potentially violent situation.

Mr. Cunningham

Who am I? I visit my aunt every summer and become friends with Jem and Scout. I want to marry Scout. I run away from home and tell tall tales. I run out of the courtroom crying when Mr. Gilmer, the prosecuting attorney, shames Tom Robinson for feeling “pity” for Mayella Ewell..

Dill
