Microbes and Disease There are three main types of microbes VIRUS- common cold, measles, polio BACTERIA- Tuberculosis FUNGI- Athlete’s foot
Bacteria multiply very rapidly. Two can very quickly, become four then eight and so on. When bacteria enter our bodies they may produce toxins. These poisonous toxins can make us feel unwell. Not all Bacteria are pathogens
Bacteria
Virus
The virus attaches itself to the cell membrane of the host cells. Ciliated cells found in the air passages
It the injects its genetic material (DNA) into the host cell.
The DNA material then makes copies of itself by using the cell’s enzymes and raw materials.
Each DNA then makes its own protein coat around itself forming a new virus.
The cell then swells with all these new viruses and it bursts letting all the viruses free to invade new cells.
The cells that have been damaged gives rise to the symptoms that we experience with the disease. All viruses are pathogens and can affect animals and plants
