MANUFACTURING PROCESS-1 PREPARED BY:- ARCHIT KABRA ( ) PANKAJ KAPADIYA ( ) RAJNIKANT JAYANI ( ) JAY SHAH ( ) TOPIC:- INTRODUCTION AND TYPES OF MILLING MACHINES CLASS:- MECHANICAL 3 rd SEM INSTITUTE:- SAL COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

FUNCTION OF MILLING Milling is the process of machining flat, curved, or Milling machines are basically classified as vertical or irregular surfaces by feeding the work piece against a rotating horizontal. The machines working on this are known as milling machines

CLASSIFICATION OF MILLING MACHINES KNEE-AND-COLUMN MILLING MACHINE – HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL TYPES – UNIVERSAL AND RAM TYPES BED-TYPE MILL -PLANER-TYPE MILLS – THE LARGEST CATEGORY -ROTARY TABLE TYPE MILLING CNC MILLING MACHINE

KNEE AND COLUMN TYPE MILLING MACHINES Knee-type milling machines are characterized by a vertically adjustable worktable resting on a saddle which is supported by a knee. The knee is a massive casting that rides vertically on the milling machine column and can be clamped rigidly to the column in a position where the milling head and milling machine spindle are properly adjusted vertically for operation

TYPES OF KNEE AND COLUMN TYPE MILLING MACHINES THERE ARE FOUR TYPES OF KNEE AND COLUMN MILLING MACHINES THE ARE AS FOLLOWS:- 1). HORIZONTAL MILLING MACHINES 2). VERTICAL MILLING MACHINES 3). UNIVERSAL MILLING MACHINES 4). RAM TYPE MILLING MACHINES

HORIZONTAL MILLING MACHINE The non-automatic general purpose milling machine of small to medium size possesses a single horizontal axis milling arbour. The work table can be linearly fed along three axes (X,Y,Z) only. These milling machines are most widely used for piece or batch production of jobs of relatively simpler configuration and geometry.

VERTICAL MILLING MACHINE The plain vertical machines are characterized by a spindle located vertically, parallel to the column face, and mounted in a sliding head that can be fed up and down by hand or power. Modern vertical milling machines are designed so the entire head can also swivel to permit working on angular surfaces

UNIVERSAL MILLING MACHINE A more complex form of the milling machine is the Universal milling machine, in which the rotating cutter can be oriented vertically or horizontally, increasing the flexibility of the machine tool. The table of the universal machine can be swivelled through a small angle (up to about 15 degrees), enabling the axis of the spindle to coincide with the axis of a helix to be milled with the use of a gear driven indexing head.

RAM TYPE MILLING MACHINE The ram-type milling machine is characterized by a spindle mounted to a movable housing on the column to permit positioning the milling cutter forward or rearward in a horizontal plane. Two popular ram-type milling machines are the universal milling machine and the swivel cutter head ram- type milling machine.

BED TYPE MILLING MACHINE In the bed mill, however, the table moves only perpendicular to the spindle's axis, while the spindle itself moves parallel to its own axis. Also of note is a lighter machine, called a mill- drill. It is quite popular with hobbyists, due to its small size and lower price. These are frequently of lower quality than other types of machines

PLANAR TYPE MILLING MACHINE These heavy duty large machines, called plan miller, look like planning machines where the single point cutting tools are replaced by one or a number of milling heads generally used for machining a number longitudinal flat surfaces simultaneously for e.g. Lathe beds, table and bed of planning machines etc.

CNC MILLING MACHINES CNC machines can exist in virtually any of the forms of manual machinery, like horizontal mills. The most advanced CNC milling- machines, the 5-axis machines, add two more axes in addition to the three normal axes (XYZ). Horizontal milling machines also have a C or Q axis, allowing the horizontally mounted work piece to be rotated, essentially allowing asymmetric and eccentric turning. The fifth axis(B-Axis) controls the tilt of the tool itself. When all of these axes are used in conjunct ion with each other, extremely complicated geometries, even organic geometries such as a human head can be made with relative ease with these machines.
