Robot History By Michél Patrón 1

Definitions of a Robot 2

According to the Robot Institute of America: A robot is a reprogrammable, multifunctional, manipulator designed to move materials, parts, tools, or specialized devices through various programmed motion for the performance of a variety of tasks. 3

According to Webster's Dictionary A robot is an automatic device that performs functions normally ascribed to humans or a machine in the form of a human. 4

Robot History Timeline 5

250 B.C. Ctesbious of Alexandria invented Clepsydra 1818 Mary Shelley wrote “Frankenstein” 1865 John Brainerd invented the 1st robot, the Steam Man 1880 Louis Phillip Perew invented Automatic Man 1893 Professor Archibald Campion invented Boilerplate 6

Automatic Man Steam Man Boilerplate 7

1921 The term robot was first used in the play “Rossum’s Universal Robots” by Czech writer Capek. The plot was man makes robot and robot kills man. The word robot meant “forced labor or slave”. 8

1942 Isaac Asimov used the term robotics in his story “Runaround 1942 Isaac Asimov used the term robotics in his story “Runaround.” In this story he stated the four laws of robotics Zeroth-A robot may not injure humanity or through inaction allow humanity to come to harm. First-A Robot may not injure a human or through inaction allow a human to come to harm. Second-A robot must obey the orders it receives by a human except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. Third-A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws. 9

1956 George Devol and Joseph Engelberger formed the world’s first robot company 10

1961 The first industrial robot was online in a General Motors automobile factory in New Jersey. It was called UNIMATE 11

1963 The first artificial robotic arm that was controlled by a computer was designed. It was called the Rancho Arm. 12

1969 The Stanford Arm was the first electrically powered computer controlled arm. 13

1970 SRI International introduced Shakey as the first mobile robot controlled by artificial intelligence. 14

1979 The Stanford Cart crossed a chair filled room without human assistance. The cart had a TV camera which took pictures from multiple angles and relayed them to a computer. 15

2000 Honda introduced their Humanoid Robot “ASIMO” 2000 Honda introduced their Humanoid Robot “ASIMO”. ASIMO can walk, run, climb stairs, and perform other movements like a human. It can also interact and respond to the actions and voices of people. 16

Robots and Today 17

Industry Robots can do many things faster and more uniformly than humans. Robots don’t need to be paid, eat, or sleep like people do and therefore are more desirable for mass production. Robots are used widely in the industrial world in manufacturing companies and are widely used in assembly line jobs. 18

Medicine People can’t be as exact as programmed machines (robots) when it comes to things such as making a cut or hole exactly one 100th of an inch, which is why this technology is extremely important today. The surgeries performed today require extreme precision which many times only robots can give. 19

Medicine cont. In addition to surgical procedures robotic technology plays the major role for prosthetics. With this technology we can give those who have lost the use of arms, legs, hands, etc. the ability to use new ones. 20

Military The military is advancing it’s technology in robotics. Robots are used to scope out dangerous territory. Many are equipped with features such as night vision and fire power. They can do tactical maneuvers and take down the enemy. 21

Entertainment The technology and potential for robotics is used in many movies either for their themes or just for characters. Many of the futuristic ideas of the past are presently being or have been created. 22

Entertainment cont. Robots also contribute to our entertainment as toys. There are thousands of robotic toys being manufactured and distributed today. 23
