What is an Operating System?  An operating system is the most important software that runs on a computer.

What does an Operating System do?  Manages applications.  It manages the computers memory, processes and all of its software & hardware.  Allows you to communicate with the computer.  Runs tests to make sure everything is working correctly.  Checks for new hardware.

What are the names of the main 3 operating systems?  Microsoft windows.  OS X  Linux

Features of Windows  Windows comes preloaded on most new PCs.  The most popular operating system in the world.  You can choose from several different versions of Windows.  Home premium, professional and ultimate.  When you update from other windows, its very different.  Windows 8 has a different start, it takes a while to get used to.

Features of Linux  Multitasking: several programs running at the same time.  Multiuser: several users on the same machine at the same time, with no two-user license.  Multiplatform: runs on many different CPUs, not just Intel.  Has memory protection between processes, so that one program can't bring the whole system down.  Linux only reads from disk those parts of a program that are actually used.  Doesn’t cost anything.  Used by 1% of the worlds computer.

Features of Mac OS X  Created by Apple.  7.5% of the worlds computers have Mac as their operating system.
