MATTHEW SQUIRE OSTEOARTHRITIS TOTAL HIP & KNEE REPLACEMENTS: PREDICTIVE FACTORS OF PATIENT OUTCOMES

BACKGROUND Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering from MUN, graduated April Enrolled in Clinical Epidemiology program Project Committee members: Dr. Proton Rahman (supervisor), Dr. Andrew Furey, Dr. Craig Stone

PROJECT BASIS Newfoundland Osteoarthritis Study (NFOAS) Initiated in 2011 by Dr. Guangju Zhai and Dr. Andrew Furey To identify genetic, epigenetic and biochemical markers for OA Baseline data collected from patients undergoing THA or TKA This data (from 700 patients) forms the basis of our new study

PATIENT BASELINE FACTORS Age Sex BMI WOMAC Score BMI First three digits of postal code Smoking status Alcohol use Occupation Ischemic heart disease Hypertension Dyslipidemia PE/DVT Anxiety/Depression Chronic back pain Diabetes Hemoglobin Blood transfusion Albumin Stroke Genetic Data

PROJECT OBJECTIVES To identify patient-related, clinical and laboratory factors that predict: Length of stay in hospital Short and long term postoperative complications Readmission To identify modifiable factors that can alter patient outcomes To examine the relationship between length of stay and readmission To determine if there are any genetic factors related to postoperative complications and readmission rates Using candidate gene analysis already genotyped

DATA ANALYSIS With the help of NLCHI, patient baseline data will be linked with length of stay, complication and readmission data Linkages will be analyzed to identify predictive relationships
