Presentation transcript:

Ancient Rome  When we discussed ancient Rome earlier this year, we learned that it grew into one of the biggest empires the world has ever seen!

Ancient Rome  The ancient Romans made many lasting contributions to the world.  They created the republic, a type of government in which people elect representatives to govern them.  This is the type of government we have in the USA!  Many languages developed from Latin, the language of the Romans. These are called the Romance languages and include Spanish, French, and Italian. These languages are still spoken all over the world!

 Take a sheet of paper and label the top of it with “Problems in Ancient Rome”  As you watch the BrainPOP (Fall of the Roman Empire), write down as many reasons as you can for why the Roman Empire collapsed in 476 AD. BrainPOP (Fall of the Roman Empire), BrainPOP (Fall of the Roman Empire),

Problems in Ancient Rome  Bad leadership  Less government power for the people  No reliable system for choosing emperors, so fighting took place over who would become leader  Financial (money) problems  Food shortages  High unemployment  Crime, riots, and other kinds of civil unrest  Military defeats  Invasions/attacks by outsiders Which of these problems do we also have in the US? Put a by the problems that we share.

1. What could be a good title for this map? 2. What do you think this symbol stands for? 3. Look for the city of Constantinople on the map on page R11 of your textbook. Can you find it? Hint: look in the modern day country of Turkey, south of the Black Sea. Use the map to answer the questions on your paper!

The Western Roman Empire, due to a wide variety of problems (money, invasions, corruption, bad leaders, starvation, unemployment, etc.), fell apart and was divided into many small kingdoms. The Eastern Roman Empire, though, grew in wealth and power and ended up being known as the Byzantine Empire. Church of Hagia Sophia, one of the most visible symbols of the Byzantine Empire Type of Byzantine art called MOSAIC art
