STEREOTYPES: WHAT’S THE PROBLEM? What are stereotypes associated with teenagers? What problems would you face if you were judged by those stereotypes? Think about some stereotypes that might be associated with you. What problems would you face if you were judged by stereotypes about your ethnicity, religion, gender, age, social position, etc.?

What’s the big deal about a “cowboy” costume? Nothing. But, what if just because you were from Texas people were always confused because: “Where’s your cowboy hat and boots? You don’t ride horses and yell yeeeehaw ?” I’d hate that. Wouldn’t you?

The University of Ohio cautions students about creating a costume out of someone’s culture. HOW DO STEREOTYPES AFFECT THE WAY WE THINK ABOUT REAL PEOPLE?

If you were this college student what would concern you about the stereotypes perpetuated by this costume? PERSPECTIVE TAKING

As a ___________ college student what would most concern me about the perpetuation of this stereotype is... [evidence, then explanation] USE THIS THOUGHT AS A FOUNDATION TO BUILD ON. BE SURE TO INCLUDE SPECIFIC EVIDENCE, AND AN EXPLANATION OF THAT EVIDENCE.

HOW DO STEREOTYPES AFFECT THE WAY WE THINK ABOUT REAL PEOPLE? It doesn’t matter what your intent was, but what the effect is.

AND THEN THE INTERNET GOT INVOLVED

STEREOTYPES: WHAT’S THE PROBLEM? How do communities encourage the use of stereotypes? How might stereotypes lead to misunderstandings and problems and limit your view of the world? Think about some stereotypes that might be associated with you. What problems would you face if you were judged by stereotypes about your ethnicity, religion, gender, age, social position, etc.?
