February 2016: 158,510 refugees and asylum-seekers registered with UNHCR in Malaysia. 1) 144,380 Myanmar, - 53,700 Rohingyas, - 44,870 Chins, - 12,220 Myanmar Muslims, - 7,150 Rakhines & Arakanese, and other ethnicities from Myanmar. 2) 14,120 refugees and asylum-seekers from other countries: - 3,520 Sri Lankans, - 1,890 Pakistanis, - 1,570 Somalis, - 1,380 Syrians, - 1,300 Iraqis, - 1,200 Yemenis, Palestinians, Iranians, and others from other countries. Some 69% of refugees and asylum-seekers are men, while 31% are women. There are some 34,300 children below the age of 18.

Vietnamese refugees 30 April the Vietnam War ended In May the first boat with 47 refugees arrived in Malaysia from Vietnam. Bidong Island was officially opened as a refugee camp on 8 August 1978 with 121 Vietnamese refugees. by June 1979 it was said to be the most heavily populated place on earth with about 40,000 refugees crowded into a flat area hardly larger than a football field. By the time Bidong was closed as a refugee camp on 30 October 1991, about 250,000 Vietnamese had passed through or resided in the camp. With the closing of the camp, the remaining refugees were repatriated back to Vietnam. 28 August 2005 when the last refugees departed Malaysia for Vietnam. In 1999, the island was opened to tourism. It has regained its former pristine beauty and many former refugees have revisited their old home
