StatSUG, 20 th Feb 2014

Today’s Topics Update on the Good Practice Team...  New staff  Expanded priorities  GPT ways of working  How are we doing? User engagement...  Ongoing activities  GPT guidance update - awareness and compliance  Look ahead / future work

Good Practice Team (GPT) changes GPT expanded in October New team members and structure:  Martin Ralphs (G6 Head)  Nick Woodhill, Tegwen Green, Steph Howarth (G7s)  Jane Carter (SRO) One G7 vacancy remains (recruitment in progress) GPT now a permanent part of the National Statistician's Office following successful pilot

GPT Priorities in 2014 Top priorities: Communication & dissemination of statistics (including statistical commentary) Working with users GSSNET website development Bubbling under: Quality GSS Data Agenda

GPT ways of working Primarily about facilitation Developing networks across the GSS  encouraging these to become self-sustaining  focus on “champion” groups Establishing community-wide resources Raising good practice awareness, reinforcing positive messages Workshops and sharing seminars What does success look like? Networks are resilient and largely self-sustaining Web resources are widely used; online communities are active and engaged Good communication and working with users are “business as usual”

How are we doing? Good progress has been made – but there is much more to do, especially on working with users Key messages are starting to penetrate Pockets of real success – these can help us to reinforce our messages Networks are not yet resilient User engagement champions still to be embedded More work to do to understand impact of existing initiatives More work to drive home the value of good user engagement Working to update web resources...

GSSNET web site update Working to reinvigorate GSSNET site and GPT presence on it: New Good Practice resource page with links to guidance and case studies Revamped “Communicating Statistics” and “Working with users” pages GPT Blog (launching shortly) Discussion forums for communication and user engagement Network discussion groups for champions

Today’s Topics Update on the Good Practice Team...  New staff  Expanded priorities  GPT ways of working  How are we doing? User engagement...  Ongoing activities  GPT guidance update - awareness and compliance  Look ahead / future work

Working with users: Ongoing activities Workshops GPT delivered 20 bespoke user engagement workshops across the GSS last year User engagement training Embedded in GSS and ONS Statistical Analyst scheme GSSNET presence Revamped with guidance and case studies (range expanding) User reference panels New panel on Health Statistics launches next week GSS Conference The GPT session voted in the top 3 presentations!

Working with users: GPT guidance update In  Guidance published on ‘Statnet’ (now GSSNET)  Disseminated by GPT at workshops Awareness of the guidance... Level of ‘compliance’... In  Rebranded and new bite sized versions  Monitor GSS hits, get feedback from users, targeted publicity  Foundation of user engagement work

Working with users: Future work Planning a GSS user engagement event In the autumn, will bring together strands around social media, networks, press etc. GPT to lead. Plan to repeat ONS “All a Twitter” event Expand use of social networking and web tools to wider GSS, incorporating OGD experiences Developing User Engagement Champions network Important group to help disseminate case studies and guidance Poverty statistics event on 29th April (joint with RSS / JRF / DWP / DECC / CLG))

Communication and dissemination GPT has delivered about 30 workshops on statistical commentary this year Embedded in GSS Induction, GSS Foundation Course and ONS Statistical Analyst training Cross-GSS “Commentary champions” network established AS / StO Peer Review Group is working well Student peer review group at ONS Task and Finish groups on communicating uncertainty and (upcoming) weather statistics User reference panels (more about this next)
