Bullying Definition Key points: It is deliberate behaviour – with the intention of hurting someone It can be done by one person, or by a group of people It is repeated over time (it is not a one off incident) There is a power imbalance Government definition: “Behaviour by an individual or group, usually repeated over time, that intentionally hurts another individual or group either physically or emotionally.”

STATISTICS What percentage of children aged say they have experienced bullying? (DCSF, 2009) 28%46%72% What percentage of parents of year olds say their children have experienced bullying? Those who are bullied are twice as likely not to be in education, employment or training (NEET) at age 16 (DCSF,2008) 1 in 3 young people aged have experienced some form of cyber bullying (BB, 2009) 20,000 young people truant everyday as a result of bullying 1 million young people are bullied every week, inside and outside of school. Decreasing the confidence, attainment and well being of those affected 44% of all child suicides in the UK may be related to bullying (BB, 2010)

Virtual Violence II Survey Results (Secondary): 1 in 3 young people have experienced cyberbulling 1 in 13 have experienced persistent cyberbullying Of these - 26% said it first happened online 20% said fear of cyberbullys made them reluctant to go to school 5% resorted to self harm and 3% reported an attempt of suicide 1 in 10 teachers experienced harassment via technology (48% heard it happening to colleagues)

Online Intervention BeatBullying’s unique online support service provides young people affected by bullying with an instantly accessible community of help and support staffed by trained peer mentors and professional counsellors and moderators every day between 8am - 2am. Whether a young person is nervous about their first day at school, or pushed to the brink of suicidal thoughts by bullying, we are there to provide immediate intervention, practical advice and ongoing support.

Impact 35% reduction in bullying in schools running the programme through young people gaining an in-depth understanding of the issue, its impact, and how to prevent it 95% of mentors trained report enhanced mentoring skills and confidence 72% of young people rate their experience of mentoring as helpful 68% report improved wellbeing 91% of teachers rate the programme as an effective intervention and report positive improvements in school life as a result

MindFull –Our New Mental Health Charity The BB group have worked with over 1.6 million young people so far. The BB Group launched BeatBullying mentors in As a result of young people speaking online to our counsellors about mental health issues it was clear a new service was needed. In 2011 we set up a young advisors panel which helped design MindFull. MindFull launched in July 2013 by Ed Milliband and Tanya Byron.

MindFull Objectives: 1. Increase young people’s awareness and understanding of mental health. 2.Improve young people’s mental health and emotional wellbeing through early intervention. 3.Encourage participation and choice over young people’s mental health service provision. 4.Deliver counseling and support to young people whenever they need it, wherever they are. MindFull will foster a culture in which young people are both confident and able to access support at the earliest opportunity.

MindFull to date Since launching on 5th July 2013 MindFull has had: 28,000+ unique visitors to the website young people registered to get support/advice 400+ counselling sessions 275+ young mentors trained 130+ life mentors (over 18s) trained
