Divided Kingdom, part 2 Judah Alone Lesson 6 The Prophet Isaiah Isa 1-39

 Prophet to Jerusalem, Judah  He also referenced Israel, other nations  Prophesied during reigns of 4 kings 1:1  Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah  Called during Uzziah’s last year 6:1  Approx. 707 B.C. (15 yrs. after Israel’s fall) The Prophet Isaiah

The Man  Son of Amoz 1:1 (6 other references)  Name = “Salvation of the Lord” –Though he did preach a message of judgment on Judah’s sins, perhaps no other O.T. prophet speaks more of ultimate salvation in the Messiah  Appears to have been married 8:3  Father of 2 sons 7:3 8:1 The Prophet Isaiah

The Man  Well acquainted with politics of his day –Unable to say whether this knowledge was by Divine inspiration only, or also by a position at court (statesman) –We can say he was some type of royal “historiographer” 2 Chron 26:22 32:32  Jewish tradition claims he was one of those slain by Manasseh cp. Heb 11:37 The Prophet Isaiah

The Message  Prophesied in Judah (along with Micah)  At the same time, Amos & Hosea in Israel  He also pronounced judgments upon other nations (Syria, Babylon, Assyria, Philistia, Moab, Ethiopia, Egypt, Edom, Arabia, Tyre)  More so God’s mouthpiece re: Judah’s need for repentance to avoid destruction  Many Messianic references (“Salvation”) The Prophet Isaiah

The Book  It can be divided into 2 main sections: Isa 1-39 “The Assyrian Period”  God’s use of Assyria to judge His people, other nations  Sins of Judah, other nations chronicled  Judah is spared from Assyrian destruction  Many references re: Christ, N.T. kingdom  Historical (non-prophetic) narrative bridges to 2nd section chs The Prophet Isaiah Jeff

The Book  It can be divided into 2 main sections: Isa “The Babylonian Period”  Babylon will replace Assyria as dominant world power  Sins of Judah, other nations chronicled  Babylon will also be judged (Medes)  Numerous Messianic references to Christ, N.T. kingdom The Prophet Isaiah Gary

Isaiah 1-39  Messages to Israel & Judah Isa 1-12 –Wickedness found among them (idols, immorality, ritualism, vanity) – God’s people are as Sodom & Gomorrah and will be treated as such – Yet, there is hope…a remnant – Even more so, the mountain of the Lord’s house will be established… Immanuel will be born… The Prophet Isaiah

Isaiah 1-39  Messages to other nations Isa –All the prophets portray God as Ruler of all nations…all are accountable to Him – God will not reprove sin among His own people and disregard it among all the other nations – Series of judgments on other nations for their sins is detailed The Prophet Isaiah

Isaiah 1-39  Contrast of God’s people, other nations Isa –A contrast is made between the judgments upon all nations for their sins (including Israel, Judah) and the glory to be restored to God’s people only – Deliverance can only be found in being God’s people The Prophet Isaiah

Isaiah 1-39  Rebukes & Promises Re: Judah’s Future Isa –Rebuke of their attitude re: God’s word –Promise of the Cornerstone in Zion –Rebuke of their reliance upon Egypt –Promise of Jehovah being the Helper in their times of trouble The Prophet Isaiah
