Psychology comes from the Greek words psyche (soul) and logos (study of a subject) Developed from the fields of philosophy and physiology

 Wilhelm Wundt  made psychology its own discipline in the late 1870s  Known as the “father of Psychology”  opened first psychology lab in 1879 Focused on attention, memory, sensory processes, and reaction time experiments  Wilhelm Wundt  made psychology its own discipline in the late 1870s  Known as the “father of Psychology”  opened first psychology lab in 1879 Focused on attention, memory, sensory processes, and reaction time experiments

 G. Stanley Hall  established America’s first research lab in psych  launched America’s first psych journal ▪ Helped establish the American Psychological Association (APA)

 Structuralism vs. Functionalism

 Structuralism says the purpose of psych is to analyze consciousness into its basic elements/parts. People associated: Wilhelm Wundt Edward Titchener uses Introspection: self-observation of one’s own conscious experience  Targets sensation and perception in vision, hearing and touch

 Can only report sensations, feelings and emotions. Pleasure I----I----I----I----I Displeasure Tensions I----I----I----I----I Relaxation Depression I----I----I----I----I Excitement

Psych should investigate the purpose of consciousness; idea of a stream of consciousness People associated: -William James Influenced by natural selection Mental processes are continuously flowing and changing yer_embedded&v=SW6nm69Z_IE

 Psychoanalytic  Behavioral  Humanistic  Cognitive  Biological  Evolutionary  Sociocultural

 Explains personality, motivation, and mental disorders by focusing on the unconscious  Looks at childhood experiences, defense mechanisms, repression of memories, etc. Thoughts, memories and desires below the surface of our awareness *Sigmund Freud

Ross's slip

 uses free association: saying the first thing that comes to mind without thinking too much about it Phoebe’s free association game

 analyzes how organisms learn behavior based on their response to events in the environment (*rewards and punishments )  only studies observable behavior =player_embedded&v=P4Rb9n_sQDgS-R QQ4 Stimulus-response

Emphasizes unique qualities + needs of humans, especially their freedom and potential for personal growth Governed by self-concept: individual’s sense of self Optimistic view- we are in control of our goals and we have the ability to adapt to the environment

 Focuses on how people acquire, process and store information (basically how we think)  topics include attention, memory, problem solving, and language acquisition

 AKA behavioral neuroscience  studies the biological/physical basis for animal and human behavior  Mostly focuses on the brain and the rest of the nervous system

 Examines behavior in terms of its adaptive value for a species  Emphasizes genetics + inheritance

 Looks at how ethnicity, gender, culture, and socioeconomic status influence behavior

Celebrity: Dennis Rodman Behaviors: Cross-dressing, rapidly changing his hair color, friendship with Korean dictator, kicked a cameraman, “married himself”. Analysis of Behavior: Biological: He has a high level of estrogen that makes him feel as though he should wear women’s clothing. Psychoanalytic: Rodman was traumatized as a child because his parents wouldn’t let him go trick or treating. He is unconsciously working through this memory and trauma by dressing up excessively. Behaviorism: The attention Rodman gets from his antics is a reward to him. He continues to act this way because people give him attention for it. Humanism: Rodman believes his true potential is to settle the conflict between North Korea and the USA. This explains his unlikely friendship with the Korean leader.
