© 2016 VITAL Consortium 11 Lessons Learnt  Semantic Interoperability across different city systems is essential for Integrated Management/Monitoring applications. However: o It comes at a cost (performance penalty, integration costs). o It is a long-term strategic commitment: ALL systems have to comply with the integration architecture (including future ones)  A great deal of the added-value lies in IoT Analytics: o In most cases IoT has to leverage data sources as well o Tools and techniques for IoT analytics are still in their infancy  Open Source solutions (like VITAL) can be appealing for smaller cities that cannot afford the adoption of large scale enterprise solutions

© 2016 VITAL Consortium 12 Conclusions  VITAL introduces a new integrated cross-platform and cross-context approach to the development & deployment of IoT applications in smart cities  It is an added-value intermediary, which provides distinct benefits for developers and city authorities  VITAL is a first (sound) step towards the wider vision of integrated development, management and governance of smart city services across areas such as energy, transport, urban mobility, security and ICT 12
