Today’s Learning Targets  Today we will learn to understand experimental design by correctly defining the steps in the scientific method and identifying independent and dependent variables, constants, and control groups.

Bell Work  Grab a book from the back room  You will be doing a Vocab scan of  Chapter 1 Section 1  Go to your Google Drive open document I shared with you.

Today’s Agenda  Model Experimental Design  Describe the steps of the scientific method  Define parts of an experiment  Identify IV, DV, constants & control group Paper Bird Activity Notes Read & Text Code Experimental Scenarios

Paper Birds QQUESTION: WWhat factors affect a paper bird’s flight? 22 attempts at the BEST FLIGHT 11 st attempt: all planes are identical 22 nd attempt: you will modify your bird WWinners get an A AA AMAZING prize!

 Q1: How will we measure the bird’s flight? How will we know which bird is best?

Paper Birds Flight #1 Ready… Set… Fly! RECORD RESULTS

Paper Birds  Use the materials to modify your plane:  Scissors  Tape  Paper clips **You may only change ONE thing about your bird** Q2: What did you change about your plane? RECORD YOUR ANSWER

Paper Airplanes Q4: Why did you make the change? What do you think will happen on the 2 nd flight? Q3:What remained the same about your plane? RECORD YOUR ANSWER

Paper Airplanes Flight #2 Ready… Set… Fly! RECORD RESULTS

The Scientific Process  1. Pose a Question  Observing natural phenomena leads one to ask questions  2. Form a Hypothesis  Hypothesis: educated guess to answer the question  Written as an If … Then … statement What factors affect the flight your bird? If (describe what you changed), then (describe the effect). If I add weight to the wings then the plane will fly straighter.

The Scientific Process  3. Test the Hypothesis  Purpose of the experiment  Experiments have 4 major parts Independent variable Dependent variable Constants Control group EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN

Experimental Design  Variable:  any factor in an experiment What are the variables in our paper airplane experiment?

Experimental Design  Independent Variable (IV):  Factor of the experiment that was purposely changed or manipulated  Dependent Variable (DV):  Factor of the experiment that responded  Factor that is measured at the end of the experiment What did you change about your plane? How did we measure the plane’s flight? Independent Variable!!! Dependent Variable!!!

Experimental Design  Constants:  Factors that remained the same throughout the experiment  Control Group:  Does not receive the IV  Used to compare and detect any unknown factors What parts of your plane stayed the same throughout the experiment? Which plane was unchanged? Constants

The Scientific Process  4. Collect & Analyze Data  Graph data  Identify trends

The Scientific Process  5. Draw Conclusions  Statement regarding your findings that mentions the IV and DV  6. Communicate Findings/Ideas  Lab Report  Results must be able to be duplicated

Let’s Practice!  Text Coding INDEPENDENT VARIABLECONSTANTS DEPENDENT VARIABLE CONTROL GROUP PASSAGE 1 Students wondered how Miracle Grow helps grow plants. They placed 100 mL of 20 o C water into identical beakers with seeds planted in them. One beaker had 0 grams of Miracle Grow added. Beaker 2 had 5 grams of Miracle Grow added. Beaker 3 had 15 grams of Miracle Grow added. Beaker 4 had 25 grams of Miracle Grow added. After one week they measured the plant’s growth in each beaker.

INDEPENDENT VARIABLE  DEPENDENT VARIABLE  CONSTANTS  CONTROL GROUP  amount of Fertilizer Plant growth Amount of soil amount of water Type of seed Growth time Type of Fertilizer Beaker with 0 grams of fertilizer

Your Turn!  Text code passage 2 INDEPENDENT VARIABLECONSTANTS DEPENDENT VARIABLE CONTROL GROUP  Get ready to answer some multiple choice questions with your clicker!

Identify the independent variable A. Air Temperature B. Size of tank C. Number of breaths D. Amount of time

The control group is 1. 0 degree air degree air degree air 4. There is no control group

The number of breaths is the A. Independent variable B. Dependent variable C. Constant D. Control Group

All of the following are constants EXCEPT A. Number of snakes B. Amount of time C. Air temperature D. Size of tank

Exp Design Practice  Read Scenario 1 through 4  Color code using the colors given for the:  IV  DV  Control Group  Constants

In scenario 1, what is the dependent variable? A. Type of coffee used B. Reduction in tumor size C. Amount of coffee D. Number of participants

In scenario 4, which of these is NOT a constant? A. Total amount of soil placed in container B. Type of sand used C. Amount of water used D. Type of peat moss used

In scenario 3, what is the independent variable? A. Type of soil B. Final temperature C. Depth of thermometer D. Time under lamp

What is the control group in scenario 1? A. There isn’t a control group B. The group drinking coffee C. The group drinking tea D. The group drinking water

What is the control group for scenario 2? A. Group 1 B. Group 2 C. Group 3 D. Group 4

In scenario 4, what soil composition held the LEAST amount of water?
