SA’s vision: sustainable growth Our vision: To enhance the benefits of air transport, while removing or minimising any impacts on the local and global environment Our role: To develop practical and policy solutions for cleaner, quieter, smarter flying Our Approach: We engage regularly with stakeholders to communicate our work and to understand their priorities We aim to be a trusted and credible source of information We focus on the UK, however our work takes place in a global context

SA Noise Road-Map - 2013

Complexity of noise annoyance Triggers of annoyance to aircraft noise are becoming more complex and variable Industry / community joint work to develop noise management options

10 years of evolving aerospace manufacturing 470 new aircraft introduced by UK airlines 359 more aircraft on order with UK airlines

Reduced aircraft noise Jet aircraft in service today are typically 12 - 15 dB quieter than those of the 1960’s A new Chapter 14, cumulative 7 EPNdB below Chapter 4, was agreed by ICAO for application to new aircraft designs after 2017, and 2020 for smaller types Looking forward, research goals include reducing the perceived noise emission of flying aircraft by 65% (15dB) in 2050 relative to a typical new aircraft in 2000

Noise Road-Map – Operational Improvements Operational Improvements relate to how and where aircraft operate Operational improvements give the opportunity to influence noise both close in to the airport and further away There is scope to increase the use of noise sharing techniques which may reduce community annoyance with noise Operational improvements can be expected to offer noise reductions of between 1 and 5 decibels (SEL) by 2030 against a 2010 baseline The exact noise improvement will vary for different communities depending on the current noise exposure and local scope for adopting new techniques

Noise Road-Map - Operational Improvements

UK aircraft noise performance

Other UK Airspace trials – Stansted Airport Worked with community groups 7 year process Change supported by Consultative Committee Environmental Issues Group

Stansted Airport RNP Trial - Results 85% fewer people overflown Before After

Luton Airport RNAV1 Airspace trials Area Navigation (RNAV1) technology for departing flights leaving the airport along the Match/Detling flight routes used during westerly operations Trials carried out from March to June 2013 found that the introduction of RNAV technology reduced the number of people over flown by 79% and will lead to annual savings of 885 tonnes of CO2 New route launched August 2015

Luton Airport – Community Reaction Neil MacArthur, of local community group Harpenden Sky, said: “On behalf of the HarpendenSky.com membership, and those other Harpenden west, south and central residents affected by Luton departing aircraft, we want to sincerely thank London Luton Airport for the understanding and effort that has been put into RNAV1 as a resolution of this issue.”

Future SA noise work Support airspace change – sharing best practice Developing best practice land use planning guidance around airport Improving how the industry works with communities to develop noise management solutions Continuing to deliver on noise reductions at source and through operational improvements Continue to provide data to show how the industry is doing on reducing noise
