Imperialism Objective: Describe European Imperialism.

What is imperialism?  Countries in Europe taking over land in Africa and Asia and set up colonies through direct rule (foreign leaders)

Why did European countries colonize Africa and Asia?  P.E.E.R.S.

Why did European countries colonize Africa and Asia? Political Power – gain influence around the world Economics – markets for products, sources of raw material (coal) Exploration – learn and explore new lands and peoples Religion – spread Christianity Social Darwinism - belief that European culture was superior to other cultures

Why did European countries want political power?  Compete with other countries  Expand territory  Boost national pride and security  Monroe Doctrine: The U.S. would stop Europe from expanding into South America

Why did European countries want economic power?  Make money!  Create new markets for products made during Industrial Revolution  Raw materials and cheap labor

Why did European countries want to explore Africa and Asia?  Scientific research  Find new resources and economic markets

Why was religion motivating Europe to expand?  Spread Christian teachings and morals to the rest of the world  Missionaries were sent to colonies to educate indigenous (native) people
