Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Problem Statement In commercial or institutional facilities with high people traffic, only a rough estimate of the building population is known in real time and even less quantitative data is known about the specific location of such population. This uncertainty hampers the efficiency of procedures that are dependent of such information such as safety recues and evacuations.

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering  Current Evacuation System Fire drills Memorize escape routes  Problems Hard to remember No real-time log of number of people in every room in a building No congestion control during evacuation Emergency Evacuation System

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering How significant is the problem?  Deaths from fires and burns are the third leading cause of fatal injury.  On average in the United States in 2010, someone died in a fire every 169 minutes, and someone was injured every 30 minutes.

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Context: Effects on Individuals  In time of panic, hard to find the correct exit route.  Possibly getting stuck inside the building during a fire emergency.

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Context: Effects on Group  Every person goes to the same emergency exit.  Congestion  Inability for everyone to get out in a timely manner

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Requirements Analysis: Specifications  Real-Time counter for the number of people entering and exiting each room in a building  Account for the difference between a person entering and exiting  Reasonably accurate  Calculate evacuation route in case of an emergency  Account for possible traffic flow  Guided pathway to nearest exit sign

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Requirements Analysis: Inputs and Outputs  Inputs  People entering a room/building  Outputs  Number of people in every room in a building  Escape routes in case of an emergency

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Block Diagram

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Block Diagram – Flow Chart

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Timeline

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Proposed MDR Deliverables  Sensor and Display Unit  Be able to demonstrate counter for people entering and exiting rooms  Display arrows to excite route  Demonstration of Android Application  Receive data from database and display floor plan with estimated number of people in each
