Summary The City The University The Department
The City Catania is one of the 9 provinces of Sicily and is the second largest city in Sicily. Catania counts over three hundred thousand of inhabitants. This number grows up to 1 million including also the population of the others 58 Commons of the province.
The City The economy of the province is deeply connected with commerce and tourism. Recently, Mount Etna, which observes with majesty the town, was declared from Unesco, “World Heritage”.

The University The University of Catania was founded in 1434 by the King of Spain Alfonso of Aragona. The number of students for year is attested on On the basis of the new reform of University, approved in 2010 (L. 240/10), the governance's structure of the University is deeply changed. The 12 traditional faculties were substituted by 23 Departments and also by the special didactic structures of Ragusa (Languages and Foreign Literatures) and Siracusa (Architecture), and the Centre of High Studies: “La Scuola Superiore di Catania”.

The Department According to the provisions of “Law 240/10”, each department must consist of at least 45 docents: Professors and Researchers pertaining to homogeneous scientific disciplinary sectors. The department carries out the functions aimed at developing the scientific research and education and training activities.

Students Available: - 4 with scholarship; - 2 without scholarship.
The Educational Offer of the Department Ph. D. in Political Sciences The principal aims of the Ph. D. are summarizable as follows: A) Training of qualified scholars in the field of political and philosophical, sociological and legal, educational and historical research with a particular regard to the problematic nature of the political dimension; A) Training of professionals with high skills to: - Counseling and Governance of national and international public institutions in the political and administrative sectors; - Governance of Social Activity, comprehension and analisys of constitutive grounds of citizenship (according to EUROPE 2020). C. Training of cultural professionals specialized to operate in the contest of international organizations.

Rector The Rector is chosen among Ordinary Professors of the University. He is elected by : - Docents of the University; - Administrative Staff (in this case, with a weighted vote of 10% of teachers having right to vote); - Students Representatives. The Rector holds office for six years and is not re-elected.
Academic Senate Academic Senate is structured as follows: - Rector; - 12 Representatives of the Directors of Departments; - 14 Docents in role; - 6 Students Representatives; - 2 Representatives of Administrative Staff. The Academic Senate defines the proposals for the planning of teaching, research and services for students.
The Board of Directors The Board of Directors is structured as follows: - Rector; - 3 External members; - 5 Docents; - 2 Students Representatives. The Board of Directors is responsible for the financial planning of the University.
