Element Keys Ms. Fauss 8 th Grade Science

Each Element You will find the following information on each square on the Periodic Table: » Atomic Number » Chemical Symbol » Element Name » Average Atomic Mass 1 H Hydrogen

Atomic Number The atomic number tells you how many protons are in the atom’s nucleus. Remember, an atom has no overall electrical charge. This means the atomic number also tells you how many electrons are in the atom.

Chemical Symbol and Element Names The Chemical Symbols are mostly one or two letter abbreviation for the element’s name Most of the names of the elements (and therefore their chemical symbols) come from Latin words

Atomic Mass The mass of the atom at rest Not measured in pounds or grams Scientists use a unit of measurement called DALTONS (named after the English Chemist John Dalton)

To Find the Number of Neutrons To find the number of neutrons in an atom: » Mass Number – Atomic Number
