go back to find TWO CDs (quotations) for EACH of your body paragraphs. Make sure you INTRODUCE them... TS First, Odysseus is a not a hero because he is a braggart. CD At the beginning of the story, Odysseus introduces himself, saying, “...” (#). CM He obviously thinks very highly of himself and is not humble. CM This makes him an arrogant person, which is the opposite of heroic. CD Another example of his bragging is when he said, “...” (#). CM Etc.

 *2* CDs for EACH body paragraph  = 6 quotations from the book (including page #s).

 TS  CD  CM  CD  CM  MAYBE CS 8 sentences each!!!

In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is not a hero. First, Odysseus is too curious. When Odysseus encounters the Cyclops, he lets his curiosity get the better of him and this causes the deaths of several crew members. Odysseus shows his curiosity when he says, “I wished to see the caveman, what he had to offer- no pretty sight it turned out for my friends” (900). This shows that Odysseus would rather see the Cyclops than have his men survive. Odysseus’s tragic flaw is that he would rather get to see the Cyclops and how he lives than to make sure his crew makes it back safely. Another example of his dangerous curiosity is... Odysseus’s need to explore the unknown is a great downfall to his crew and his quest to return home.

Type of HookExamples Quotation - General Patton once said, “If a man does his best, what else is there?” - When Hillary Clinton said “we must stop thinking of the individual and start thinking about what is best for society,” she highlighted one of the biggest issues in American politics. Anecdote - There was nothing more isolating than being alone in a foreign country, with no cell phone, no money, and no ability to speak the language. - It was Christmas of 1995 when my parents taught me a valuable lesson: always expect the unexpected. Rhetorical question - Have you ever wondered what you would do if you couldn’t fail? - What’s the one thing you can do to make the world a better place? Interesting fact - China is going to spend $850 billion to clean up its water supply over the next decade. - Ancient Egyptians used heavy eye makeup to keep evil spirits at bay and to protect their eyes from infection. Simile or metaphor - When I first went to Japan, it was like a baby bird trying to fly for the first time. - The high rate of poverty in America is the country’s elephant in the room.

Again, for this essay, mention both title and author. VERY APPROPRIATE to apply to current political situation!!

55: Finish the rough draft What do you need to do to finish the RD so that it is ready for Friday’s peer review???? If you are done hand-writing a draft, could you begin TYPING so that you are closer to a FD for next week? What could you do to make your RD better????? When you are done, READDDDDD

Daily Participation Points: 5- BYOB!! Read the whole time. Engaged! 4- Read the majority of the time. Tried! 3-Read some of the time had to be reminded. Floundered! 1-No reading, sleeping, off task. Struggled!

 Select a NEW book that you have NEVER read before  Books w/ movies are okay... You can even see the movie!!!... But you also need to read the book.  At least 200 pages, probably more, and appropriate for your reading level  You are looking for a FICTION book, or a non-fiction biography... Not a textbook, not a topic (“auto mechanics”)... You will need to discuss STORY STRUCTURE and CHARACTER.  If you finish this book before the end of the quarter, you will select another book and KEEP READING  There WILL be a book talk (slightly diff)... We’ll discuss later.
