Current Program Goals 1.Students will be able to use a Language Other Than English (LOTE) for communication in the skill areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing at Checkpoint A, B, and C levels. 2.Students will develop cross-cultural skills and understanding of the target language. 3.Teachers will focus on the integration of technology into LOTE lessons, making better use of interactive software, online resources such as learning management systems, and mobile technology. Teachers will integrate technology in each classroom to enable students to learn from authentic materials, interact with native speakers, and present the language through the four language skills. 4.District will provide a high quality language lab to enhance technology integration and enrich student learning. 5.Teachers will increase the use of effective teaching strategies so that by the end of Grade 9, all students will meet NYS Proficiency standards. 6.Teachers will encourage third and fourth language learning. 7.Teachers will maintain frequent use of authentic cultural materials in the curriculum per NYS Learning Standards.

Future Program Goals 1.Students will have increased cultural sensitivity and global awareness. 2.District will reinstate elementary LOTE program. Teachers will implement a formal foreign language program in the elementary school, offering French and Spanish K-6. 3.Teachers will increase the integration of up-to-date technology into LOTE lessons. 4.Teachers will strive for 60% of students to attain mastery level on both the NYS French and Spanish Regents exams. 5.Teachers will strive to increase the percentage of students receiving a 3 or higher on the AP exams. 6.LOTE department will have improved communication with the Mandarin teachers.

Program Delivery 1.Staff Members: ➢ High School: 2 full-time LOTE teachers 3 half-time itinerant BOCES teachers ➢ Middle School: 2 full-time LOTE teachers ●1 teacher is shared between middle and high schools 1.Course Offerings: ➢ 20 sections of high school LOTE ➢ 13 sections of middle school LOTE ➢ LOTE class sizes are 3-28 students. ➢ Courses offered from 6th-12th grade. 3.Instructional methods are both teacher- directed and student-centered with communicative approaches. 4.Technology use includes Brainhoney, Photostory, Movie Maker, Quizlet, Quia, Google Apps for Educations, Conjuguemos, YouTube, TeacherTube, Learn360, Kahoot, Infuse Learning, Remind, iPads, iMovie, CultureGrams, Plickers, SNAP, Skype, Class Dojo, etc. 5.Assessments: Checkpoint A exam, Checkpoint B exam, MVCC exam, AP French and Spanish language exam 6.Approximately 30 students participate in the National French Contest each year. Our students often receive State and/or National recognition.

Influences on Program Current: 1.NYS Learning Standards 2.One-year language credit requirement for Regents Diploma 3.Three-year language credit requirement for Advanced Regents Diploma ➢ *In 2014, 57% of CCS graduates received an Advanced Regents Diploma 4.MVCC curricula for 191/192 (6 credits) and 201/202 (6 credits) 5.Increased accessibility of authentic cultural materials 6.Immigration and Francophone/Hispanic cultural influences 7.Global economy Future: 1.Brain and learning research regarding the optimal age for language acquisition and effective teaching practices 2.Increasing technology integration through the creation of language lab.

Future Considerations: ➢ Areas Needing Attention: The LOTE departments intends to expand the formal elementary foreign language program to the 3 rd -5 th grades. ➢ Projected Needs – Next Five Years: The LOTE department will continue to update technology use to accommodate new software capabilities, cultural interaction and increased communication skills. The LOTE department is exploring options for language lab integration to increase authentic use of the target language.

LOTE Department Challenges: ➢ Improve student performance on AP exams ●The new requirement that every student take the AP exam is improving overall scores. ➢ Maintain program quality within staff limits ➢ Establish a common planning period to increase collaboration ➢ Meet the needs of imbalanced class sizes ➢ Offer a more expansive 6th grade French and Spanish program consistent with Mandarin Model ➢ Continue to update technology use to accommodate new software capabilities, cultural interaction and increased communication skills
