Habitat Web Quest 4th Grade Project

Introduction Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Credits You are a famous Utah Naturalist, well known for your expertise in caring for rare animals. One day when you get home you find a wood crate that has been delivered to your house with your name on it. You carefully open the crate and find inside a pair of animals that you have never seen before. A note attached to the animals says, “ I’m no longer able to care for these very rare animals, they may be the only ones of their kind left in the world. I know you will find a way to care for them. Thank You!” You decide that you must learn as much as you can about animal habitats to take care of these animals. You talk to the Utah Legislature and they have agreed to let you build a special environment for the animals in Utah on 10 acres of land. At the end of this WebQuest you will display a picture of the animals and the habitat you have created for them. You will explain what their needs are and how you will provide them. Task Introduction Task Process Your task is to learn about as many of the different types of animal habitats as you can. Take notes about each habitat. You will become an expert on a habitat of your choice. You will create a drawing, or picture, of the animals. You will design a habitat exhibit that will meet the special needs your animal will require to survive. You will display the animal pictures and habitat to the class in a format of your choice. You will provide explanations for the different parts of the exhibit. You will decide where the 10 acres of land the Utah legislature gave you will need to be located. Choose your favorite animal habitat and do additional research to become an expert. 3. Draw a picture of your rare animals, or go to www.switchzoo.com to create your animals. If you use switchzoo you can print a picture of your animal. 4. Use the Internet Zoo Web Links page to tour some zoos online and get ideas for the habitat you will be creating. 5. Design and draw pictures of you special animal habit exhibit for your rare animals. 6. Make a class display of your animals and their exhibit. Give detailed explanations of the animals adaptations to their environment. 7. Write or give explanations of the different parts of the exhibit. 8. Watch Video’s on different types of Biomes. Conclusion Introduction Task Process Congratulations, you have done a great job!  When you are finished with this project, you should know about many different habitats.  You may want to further explore animal habitats to learn about plant and animal types that live in the one you researched.   If you want to take your project further you may want to research what you can do to help protect plants and animals that live in the habitat you have learned the most about. Animal Requirements Create or Draw a picture of your animals. http://www.switchzoo.com you can go to this web site to create fun unique animal pictures. Give your animals a name. Write a paragraph with a clear topic sentence describing your animals. Write another paragraph which explains, what basic needs do animals share, how do body parts help animals meet their needs, and how do behaviors help animals meet their needs? Identify relationships and interactions of different parts of the habitat.

Extra Activities Students can make a cartoon strip that includes two animals and at least two basic needs. The cartoon strip will be a short story using animals that talk. Students can make a word search using an on-line link called puzzlemaker.com. The word search will contain words that describe the basic needs of animals, adaptations, physical, and behavior characteristics of animals. Students can write a cinquain poem. The poem will describe the animal in detail. Students can write an acrostic poem. Start by writing the animal’s name vertically along the left edge of the paper. Then use each letter as the beginning letter of a word describing the animal. Students can write an add-a-word poem. Example Students can read Animalia by Graeme Base. After reading the book the students will write their own animal alliteration.
