After a very difficult start – including the Sparatcist Revolt of 1919 (Left-wing revolt) and Kapp Putsch of 1920 (Right-wing revolt) – things started to settle down in Germany… … but in 1923 everything went horribly wrong, putting Ebert’s Government under huge pressure… … like many events in History, Germany’s problems in 1923 were mainly about money … Uh oh…

CRISIS 1 : THE OCCUPATION OF THE RUHR Germany paid its first ToV payment in 1921… … but in 1922 it fell behind… … in Jan 1923 French & Belgian troops marched into the Ruhr – the heartland of German industry – and seized all the factories and mines there What options did Ebert have? How could he have responded?

Hyperinflation – Germany 1923

THE WEIMAR GOVERNMENT’S RESPONSE… The Gov. told all Germans in the Ruhr not to cooperate with the French. Everyone went on strike… But it felt it had to keep paying them. This cost a lot of money… … but the Gov. now had no income from the Ruhr… … so soon it ran out of real money…

CRISIS 2: HYPERINFLATION … after running out of money the Gov. simply printed more… … but people lost confidence in it and prices shot sky high… … by Nov 1923 the Germany currency was worthless and the German economy had collapsed

Berlin, 24 th June 1919
