PE4Life Resource Conference October 4, 2010

What I’ve Learned Travels and visitations from the PEP Grant and curriculum review. –Neshaminy, PA - Fox Chapel, PA - West Babylon, NY - Titusville, PA – Naperville, IL Passionate leaders make the difference: –Phil Lawler, Tim McCord, Bob Miller, Lynn Leicht, Diane Shenot, Claudia Hickley $$ is not the solution. You are! Stop asking if the glass is half full or half empty. Instead ask "What's in it? How did it get there? What can I do with it? David Kaufman

Viewpoints Creating an Attitude Others perspectives; –Parents –Administrators –Teachers Who is our biggest problem? –Questioning Phil What do we “GET TO DO TODAY” vs. What do we “HAVE TO DO TODAY”

Stretching Ourselves 90% of learning occurs in the stretch zone In traditional physical Education most students are either in their comfort zone or panic zone. If you expect kids to stretch themselves you must lead by example This is what we “GET TO DO”!

Why is PE Important? People need to understand; Health related fitness impacts their/our personal quality of life (star athlete example) Their/Our health impacts our whole society Their/Our level of fitness has changed, can change, and will change based on your actions, NOW is the time to take control of your life

Physical Education Curriculum, Guiding Objectives: All students will be lifelong learners, to facilitate this we (teachers) need to address why each curriculum unit is presented and how to extend participation beyond the class. All curriculum units presented will be lifetime in nature and emphasis physical fitness. We will attempt to expose students to many different activities. Every student may not enjoy every activity but if each student finds a few activities to participate in for a lifetime we have accomplished our number one goal.

Course Highlights Use video for: Open House Parent Advisory Groups Move Up Days This is what we “GET TO DO”!

NAIHS PE Curriculum Outline

What Can You Add? PASSION: Share with your students why fitness and the activities that you teach are important in everyday life through example and stories (biking to Niagara) INITIATIVE: Do not listen to those who say no! Change what you have control over, your class (principals example 15%, 80%, 5%) CONNECT: Get involved, PSAHPERD, local AHPERD, PE4Life, Action for Healthy Kids BE A ROLE MODEL: Practice what you preach, you don’t have to be the best. CREATE WIN/WIN PARTNERSHIPS: business, other schools, university

Enthusiasm I rely more on enthusiasm than skill. Whatever I do, do it enthusiastically and people will like it more. I can’t dance like Usher, sing like Beyonce, or write songs like Elton John. But, I can do the best with what I’ve got. So that’s what we do, WE JUST GO FOR IT! Chris Martin, Coldplay

Low to No Cost Content Ideas Cross Fit Chi Running Aerobic Games Mobile Gym Yoga Adventure Education

Cross Fit: Getting a lot out of a little (time / equipment) Focus on technique and building slowly, incremental goals (authentic formative assessment) This is what we “GET TO DO”!

The “Murph” Run 1 mile, 100 pull-ups, sets of pushups, sets of squats, sets of 30 Run 1 mile (Tie in FitnessGram)

Tabata Workout Rounds of 20 seconds work, 10 seconds rest; pull-ups, push-ups, sit-up, squats

Running Technique: –Power Running vs. Chi Running: Power running is what most people do; they push themselves forward using their legs. Chi Running is using outside energy (Chi) to do most of the work for you while maximizing your running efficiency. “Every aspect of ChiRunning and ChiWalking is about creating energy efficiency and preventing injury. The first thing we do is set up the conditions for energy to flow easily through the body by creating good posture. Good posture also allows the body to take advantage of gravity for propulsion, and therefore needs less energy. Engaging your core muscles helps keep your posture in line, which then allows many other muscles to relax. Using gravity for propulsion significantly reduces muscle usage throughout your body.” –The toll running can take on your body- There is no doubt that running is one of the best things you can do to take care of your heart, mind, and body. Due to the high impact nature of running you can also tear down your body if you are running with improper body alignment and technique. The joints withstand a force approximately 2.5 to 3X your body weight with each foot strike at an average distance running pace and 6X during a sprint. –DistanceFoot Strikes Per Foot 1 Mile880 5k2,728 10K5,456 Half Marathon11,528 Marathon23,056 –How many of us teach technique? –Aerobic base building –Pacing This is what we “GET TO DO”!

THE MASTER IN THE ART OF LIVING The master in the art of living makes little distinction between: their work and their play, their labor and their leisure, their mind and their body, their education and recreation, their love and their religion. They hardly know which is which. They simply pursue their vision of excellence in whatever they do, leaving others to decide whether they are working or playing. In their mind, they are always doing both. This is what WE “GET TO DO”!

Thank you for listening
