Change, Change, Change! No, No! Not this kind of change… THIS KIND OF CHANGE!

Physical Change A physical change DOES NOT produce a new substance. Changes in state or phase are physical changes. – Melting – Freezing – Vaporization (boiling, evaporation) – Condensation – Sublimation → – Dissolving The starting and ending materials of a physical change are the same, even though they may look different.

Examples of Physical Changes Examples of physical changes include crushing a can, melting an ice cube, breaking a bottle, salt water.

+

Chemical Change A chemical change produces a new substance. A chemical change makes a substance that wasn't there before and is often difficult to reverse.

Evidence a Chemical Change has occurred: Light Heat Color Change Gas Production (bubbles can count) Odor Sound Tarnishing Rusting Flammability

Examples of Chemical Changes Examples of chemical changes include combustion (burning), cooking an egg, rusting of an iron pan, and oxidation of an apple.

Several examples in ONE! Odor Color Change Gas Heat
