Spooky Stories! January 25th 2016

Learning intentions To use adjectives and similes correctly to create an atmosphere within our writing. To look at how descriptive language can be used to create an effective opening to our spooky stories.

What are adjectives and similes? Are describing words, e.g. a colour Similes: Describe something using a comparison, e.g. He was as white as a sheet.

Spooky adjectives and similes! Creepy Dark Slimy Dark as night. Cold as ice. Add to the lists, try and get at least 6 on each.

Complete these sentences with different spooky adjectives and similes. The grave yard was as…. The dogs eyes were glowing like… I felt my heart jump like a… The castle was…. A …. hand closed round my …. A …. figure stood in front of me like a ….

Now write your own scary story opening. Use at least 2 similes and 4 adjectives. Here’s an example: I arrived at the castles iron gates, they were locked shut like a prison. I gazed up at the huge, grey stone castle as it towered over me like a cliff. My heart was beating in my chest like a drum and my hands were shaking like a leaf. I took a deep breath and started to walk along the mossy, green path in front of me into the misty air…..
