Dying and Death Chapter 5 Section 3

Death Thanatology – the study of dying and death

Stages of Death Denial (1 st Stage)- the person is shocked or numb to the news. They will then question their diagnosis “The Dr. doesn’t know what he/she is talking about” This is important – the person can move to the next stage or completely deny what’s happening and continue to live their life without treatment

Stages of Death Anger (2 nd Stage) – the person is angry about the news, their fate, people in their life & the powers that allowed it to happen (God) Usually alienate themselves and no one can help them

Stages of Death Bargaining (3 rd Stage) – they accept their fate and begin trying to find ways to get more time Ask God for more time Change of ways

Stages of Death Depression (4 th Stages) – they are depressed about the loss to come (loss everybody & everything) How would you help someone going through this?

Stages of Death Accept (5 th Stage) – They accept their fate and are calm about it. They will start to become detached to make death easier on them and their family

Exceptions Not all people go through all of the stages Some people may stay at one stage or repeat certain stages over

Death Today Modern medicines and advancements have made the average life span 78. It is now common for people to die in nursing homes and hospitals

Hospice Hospice- A place where terminally ill people go to die The goal is to make the patient surrounding pleasant and comfortable during a difficult time. Not prolonging life but to improve the quality
