Essential ? What major events affected Europe in the Late Middle Ages?

Romanesque Churches  Build in the shape of a rectangle, often intersected to form the shape of a cross  Heavy thick walls, no room for windows

Gothic Churches  One of the greatest artistic achievements of the High Middle Ages.  Flying Buttresses allowed the walls to be thinner, could now add stained glass windows

Numbered Heads #1 What were important developments in European culture in the High Middle Ages? (Think architecture, education, and literature)

Causes of the Black Death  Bubonic Plague killed 33 to 50% of Europe’s population from 1347 to 1351  Carried by rats infested with fleas carrying a deadly bacteria, on cargo ships  Italian trade ships from the middle east brought the rats to Europe  The plague was believed to be a punishment from God  Infected people would not show symptoms for weeks.  Would flee the city at first signs of plague and carry it to other towns

Effects of the Plague  Anti-Semitism ( hatred toward Jews)  Labor shortages, decline in trade and lower food prices.  Decline in serfdom, peasant revolts  Growth of cities  Decline in Church influence and an increase in immorality (eat, drink, tomorrow we die)  Intellectuals dared to explore ideas forbidden by the Church – leads to the Renaissance

1347: Plague Reaches Constantinople!

The Symptoms Bulbous Septicemic Form: almost 100% mortality rate.

Gangrene is one of the manifestations of plague, and is the origin of the term "Black Death" given to plague throughout the ages.

Attempts to Stop the Plague A Doctor’s Robe “Leeching”

A Little Macabre Ditty “A sickly season,” the merchant said, “The town I left was filled with dead, and everywhere these queer red flies crawled upon the corpses’ eyes, eating them away.” “Fair make you sick,” the merchant said, “They crawled upon the wine and bread. Pale priests with oil and books, bulging eyes and crazy looks, dropping like the flies.”

“I had to laugh,” the merchant said, “The doctors purged, and dosed, and bled; “And proved through solemn disputation “The cause lay in some constellation. “Then they began to die.” “First they sneezed,” the merchant said, “And then they turned the brightest red, Begged for water, then fell back. With bulging eyes and face turned black, they waited for the flies.”

“I came away,” the merchant said, “You can’t do business with the dead. “So I’ve come here to ply my trade. “You’ll find this to be a fine brocade…” And then he… sneezed!!!
