Buildings & Grounds State of the Schools

The role of the custodial staff for Foley Public Schools is to provide a safe, comfortable and clean environment for the students to learn and staff to work. District assets will be protected by maintaining our facilities in their most original condition, while continuing to improve the facilities’ functional abilities in order to keep pace with the changing needs of the building occupants. Although not often thought of as a key ingredient of successful education environment, the school custodian not only plays an essential role in maintaining and cleaning the building, but also the health, attitude and pride of the students, staff & community.

Every day is different depending on the events of the day. It is important that the custodian understands the position, obligation and affiliation with others in the organization. Providing a clean well maintained environment is the responsibility for the custodial department. This will help ensure the district goal of providing a quality education for the students. A clean, comfortable safe classroom will provide a positive learning environment for the students and teachers alike.

Our campus is 97 acres of which 32 acres are grass. The three schools cover square feet not including the A.L.C. and the new bus garage. A staff of 13.5 personnel is responsible for this facility, including snow removal which is done by our staff which makes for some longer days.

Our quality of work is measured by our customers. When the public, staff or students compliment our facility on how well things are looking or running, and by maintaining the buildings and grounds in the most efficient, safe & economical way, while meeting the needs of the students, staff & community.

We continue to work on energy efficiency and updating electrical equipment. We are now looking at L.E.D. lighting in the Gym, Fieldhouse and outside lighting. For example - parking light, a 400 watt light fixture would be replaced by a 78 watt L.E.D. fixture, with a life expectancy of 20 years, huge savings of energy. Over the past years we have enjoyed the savings from the energy management system, retrofitted lights and by implementing green cleaning.

As workloads continue to grow and new responsibilities arise, the staff continues to find new ways to change their cleaning methods to meet the demands to serve the students and staff.

We always strive to be at our best for the students. To become more a skilled custodial staff, we must observe and study all various phases of our work. There is no easy way to accomplish this as maintenance procedures and mechanical operational sequences are quite complex and will require considerable time to study and lean.
