STUTTERING  Also known as stammering, is a speech disorder in which the flow of speech is disrupted by involuntary repetitions.  It includes fear of having to pronounce specific vowels.  Acute nervousness and stress do not cause stuttering but they can trigger stuttering in people who have the speech disorder.  Stuttering is not an indication of reduced intelligence.  In rare cases, stuttering may be acquired in adulthood as the result of a neurological event such as a head injury, tumor, stroke or drug abuse/misuse.
